Keep it Light with Family Members

This is an area that requires clever maneuvering. But it's a trap that many fall into time after time. Communication can be tricky with extended family members. In order to preserve a happy relationship with them, you must be careful. You always want to avoid deep issues of conversation with the extended family. The sooner you do this, the smoother your life will be.

The best way to maximize a positive relationship with them is to limit conversation to food, funny kid stories, and gardening tips. If you give into the temptation to discuss religion, relationships, or politics, you'll find trouble every time. If a family member is making some bad personal decisions, simply smile and be supportive. Stay on track. Focus on the food. Discuss how the deviled eggs have just the right amount of mustard. Everyone will nod in agreement and the serious issue will float by without a notice. You may find yourself at a holiday meal relaxing with your 4th glass of wine. The urge to open up and share some deep issues may creep in. Try finding a child and have him do something silly. You and others will soon be distracted and saved from a yearlong silent treatment with one of your family members. Alcohol can be a good distracter, but it can also be dangerous, so proceed with caution. Possibly consider drinking only after you return home where you are safe to endlessly rant about your family to your spouse (who is always on your side if he knows what's good for him).
