Keep Motivation in Your Work Outs

Greg Wendland
One of the hardest parts to working out, or getting started, is getting yourself motivated. Motivation is the key to anything, and once you have it, keeping it is the key to continual satisfaction while working out. Try these steps to help you in your success.

Have Fun. If you are not doing something that you enjoy doing, why bother? Most times, you will not get the results you are looking for. Simply, your heart has to be in it. Find something you like. The list of different exercises is nearly endless. The only important thing is to get your body moving and your heart rate up.

Change it up. Mixing up your routine will keep your work out fresh. If you bike, try a new trail. If you swim, try a different pool, or a trip to the lake. Even trying different exercises will keep things new. This will not only keep you interested, it will confuse your muscles, break them out of the routine, and produce desired results. Once you see those results, your motivation is sure to skyrocket.

Make an appointment. Often you hear that you should set aside time everyday to exercise. People tend to create a schedule. Make that appointment. Your life's schedule may not allow exercise to be completed at the same time daily, but you can schedule that time each day.

Get a friend. Peer Pressure can be used positively. You are more likely to be motivated if you are working out with a friend and helping to motivate them as well. Talking and laughing while exercising will also keep you from being bored.

Pay for stuff up front. Do not go overboard, but if you have the option of paying for an exercise class one at a time or in a block, pay for the block. Knowing that you will be wasting money if you do not show up may motivate you. After all, who wants to lose money and only have you to blame?

Clothing. Trying to workout if you do not have the clothes for it is frustrating. Make sure the clothing looks nice, however. If you do not like the way your clothing looks, it will stop your motivation in its tracks.

Organization is Key. Grab everything you're going to need during your work out and keep it nearby. If you work out at a gym, get yourself a gym bag to keep everything in. This will allow you to be more organized and ready to go, rather than losing motivation while you try to remember, and find, everything you need. When you finish working out, take out things that need to be laundered, and replace them immediately.

Many people start out with enthusiasm and lose faith when they do not see dramatic results right away. Remind yourself of the small steps you are taking. Be realistic with yourself. Real change takes about 8 weeks to be seen. Visual reminders, such as pictures, will help you achieve your goals. Whether it is a picture of you at a certain weight in the past, or family members that might be the cause of your motivation, having those pictures available to view will keep you motivated. If none of that appeals to you, then get yourself a picture of the hottest girl at work, that should do the trick.

Working out involves motivation and dedication. Dedication is created through constant motivation. Therefore, the key thing here is to figure out what will keep you going, especially when you may plateau and the gains are not readily noticeable. Finding your paths of motivation may just allow you to keep that New Years Resolution, this year.
