Keep Your Sim Happy in Sims 3

Sim Sleep, Basic Needs and Hard Work like Real Life

Besides being an addictive, time-consuming game, Sims 3 (Electronic Arts) has some important life lessons. Like real humans, Sims have basic needs, have to work for what they get and are happiest when they are social.

Get Enough Sleep

We all function best when we have enough sleep. Sims are no different. Shortchange your Sim on sleep and he will be unhappy and won't perform at his best. Adults in the real world sometimes need to learn this lesson. We get caught up in taking care of our homes, families and work and don't get all the sleep we need.

Take Care of Basic Needs

Our basic needs, like hunger and hygiene, seem so simple to take care of. Yet, when we are pressed for time, we all tend to skimp in these areas. Sure, we may eat, but are we grabbing the healthiest meal? And, a quick tooth brushing and hand washing doesn't quite make up for skipping a shower. Sims are unhappy when these basic needs aren't met. We are, too.

Work Hard to Fulfill Dreams

Like us, Sims have dreams and goals. It becomes evident early in a game of Sims 3 that Sims have to put time into improving their skills to make wishes come true. In his book On Writing (Pocket Books, 2001), Stephen King said "If you want to be a writer you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot." The Sims know this. The more they write, the more their writing skill level rises. Many of us know this in real life, too. This is nothing new. After all, practice makes perfect.

Get Out and Meet People

There are times in a person's life when it can be hard to be social. However, studies have shown that social people tend to be happier. If you find yourself stuck at home because you're new to an area, newly retired or a stay-at-home mom, force yourself to get out and meet people. It can be hard to make connections, but stick with it. Join groups, find a church you like or volunteer. The Sims know it's important to be social. They'll even throw parties to increase their social well-being and happiness.

Who knew there would be life lessons from the Sims 3? Use your playing time as inspiration for your own life. Take care of yourself, practice your skills and get out and meet people.
