Keeping Children Fit and Active

Matthew Schieltz
With all the hustle and bustle of everyday life, many parents are finding it hard to feed their children the healthiest of foods. Because of this, some children suffer by being forced to eat a greasy fast food restaurant hamburger or cheeseburger that barely has enough nutrition for an animal to even eat. What's more: French fries are being eaten that have been cooked in a swamp of dirty oil that will not only clog your arteries, but give you an increased risk of heart disease!

There are some simple things that you can do to keep your children fit and active within their daily lives. One of the first things that you can do to help them is to allow them to go outside and play. Of course, their homework in school is of utmost importance and that should not be ignored. But going outside to play with their friends is also important. It is not only important for socialization, but also will allow them to burn some calories and make them even healthier by exercising.

Furthermore, sports should be an option for children who want to pursue them. This will give them an even greater chance that they will be away from a sedentary lifestyle that will only hurt them. Keeping children away from the television for a good portion of the week by having them involved in Little League, a local soccer team, or other sports team is an excellent way to have them involved in getting exercise. Children in America watch an average of 3 to 4 hours of television a day, which comes out to about 21 to 24 hours of television a week. Combine that with their average sleeping time, which is about 8 hours per night, and you have a perfect recipe for a sedentary lifestyle.

Of course, there are plenty of other options available for those children who don't want to play sports. For example, the parent and child can go out together to take on activities. Horseback riding and swimming are only a couple examples that a parent and child can do together. By having a parent involved with the children's activities will not only increase the amount of exercise, but also will also make the parent-child relationship stronger by having that sense of bonding!

Taking all of this into consideration will give you many thoughts and ideas to keep obesity of your children at bay. Certainly your children will be grateful to you later on down the road because of the choices that you made to help keep them fit and active. By having fit and active children and also getting involved you will increase the chance that your child will have a long, healthy life!
