Keeping Cool During a Heat Advisory Warning
Ways to Beat the Heat and Stay Safe when It's Sweltering Outside
Don't work too long in the full sun. If this cannot be avoided, try and wear a hat. Sunscreen is also helpful in this situation. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking lots of water. Take frequent breaks from work and pace yourself. The same goes for working in poorly ventilated areas. This is a good time to try out some 'cool' gear like the Watersorb neck band or a personal travel fan. If you're working near home or a water hose, refresh yourself with a cool shower occasionally.
Wearing clothes with lighter colors can help. Dark colors absorb more sunlight and heat. Loose-fitting clothes are also beneficial in hot conditions.
Remember to drink lots of liquids and keep a supply nearby at all times. This is a great time to use portable coolers. A good idea is to keep a small cooler filled with ice and water with you. You can reuse water bottles for this purpose. Try adding a few drops of lemon or lime juice to ice cold water to add some refreshing kick.
Children and the elderly are at special risk during these times. Check up on elderly members of your friends and family. If they need help, you can take them to the nearest area cooling center. Cooling centers have shade and water available. Often these centers will have medical help and social services representatives who can aid with ongoing care. Check in on your elderly neighbors too. They might not have friends or family to assist them should they need help. Try and keep children inside in an air conditioned area. Remember never to leave children or pets in a vehicle for any amount of time. Temperatures in a parked vehicle can rise rapidly even with the windows rolled down.
Sometimes a heat advisory can bring poor air quality conditions with it. Check your local weather media or try the National Weather Service web site for more information on the air quality in your area. You might want to cut down on the amount of travel you're planning when air conditions are bad, if possible.
Staying indoors doesn't have to boring! Try dusting off those board games in the closet or whip up a batch of homemade ice cream. The Family Corner website also has great ideas for fun indoor activities for you and your children.
Remember to always stay safe and beat the heat!
