Keeping the Faith During Troubling Times

Benjamin Ira Mikell
We are undoubtedly facing very troubling times. Many people, including President Barack Hussein Obama, have boldly and repeatedly proclaimed the continued downfall in our nation's economy is far worse than what our ancestors endured during the Great Depression. Whether their pronouncement is true, only time will tell.

If you have recently lost a job, have been laid off for a long time, or are worried your current position could disappear in the near future, you are not alone. Many individuals and families like you are suffering in various ways from the devastating effects of losing a job.

Across America, numerous families are struggling daily to pay their bills on a family budget that is much smaller and tighter before one or both parents lost their job. Others have lost either all or a certain portion of their retirement savings. There are also those who no longer live in their home because the job loss has affected their ability to keep paying their mortgage on time as well as other causes. These are just a few examples of how those affected by the growing economic crisis are struggling to survive.

I, personally, have experienced losing my job in the fall of 2008. After being laid off, I prayed to God to help me and my family to overcome this difficult situation as well as any additional problems that may arise. When several weeks had passed, and I had exhausted every possible place for a job, the Lord blessed me with my current position that allows me to continue using my talents for Him as well as helping to provide for my family. It is also the same type of job that I was doing before being laid off.

Regardless of what your circumstance may be, and how much it is affecting your life, you should feel encouraged knowing that God has always loved and cared for you. "Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need," (Hebrews 4:16). He also wants you to lean on Him for His enduring strength and guidance whenever trouble arises, especially right now. "Be not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help," (Psalms 22:11).

In most of our hymnals there are older songs that teach us lessons about faith, trusting in the Lord, seeking Him for His help through the avenue of prayer, helping each other if we have the resources to do so, etc. These hymns are "Leaning On The Everlasting Arms," "Be Strong In The Faith," "Does Jesus Care?" and, "Are You Weary, Are You Heavy Hearted?" just to name a few. I would encourage you to study them and search the Bible for scriptures that will help you keep the faith during these troubling times.

Wonderful article! Thanks for writing this as people need all the encouragement and someone to point, especially in these days. God will never leave us or forsake us if we are His children. I hope you have visited my site and read some of my articles on these very things. Let's keep pointing everyone to THE ONE.

Very encouraging. Sometimes we forget just what God can and will do for us if we only ask and have faith.
