Keeping Your Job Despite the Personal Problems in Your Life

Melvin Richardson
Sometimes we let the changes in our life affect what happens at our jobs. I know it is difficult but if at all possible keep personal changes in your life separate from your job.

If you allow your changes to interfere with your job chances are you are going to make the wrong decisions. These decisions can take the form of a major project. If you are working on a major project that you may make the wrong decisions or omit some information.

When personal changes make you want to quit your job that's when you want to be aware. Here are some things that may cause you to leave your job.

1. divorce.
2. death of a spouse or child
3. a break up in a relationship.
4. a failed business.
5. loss of large sum of money.
6. caring for an elderly parent
7. caring for a child with special needs, (emotional, physical, etc.)
8. turning a certain age and deciding to start a business because you feel life is passing you by. Keep your job and start the business on the side.

Always keep your job if at all possible. It is a good idea to hang out with friends and family for support and you should take a leave of absence if necessary which still leaves you job in place. Check with your employer to see if you qualify for any type of paid absence or if the absence will be unpaid. Your own individual circumstances will determine which you qualify for.

Start doing some volunteer work, (if your schedule allows it and you can focus on it). Volunteering will take your mind off of you and put the emphasis on serving others. This will give you a good feeling on the inside and who knows maybe you will meet someone that can help you solve or feel at ease about one of the aforementioned scenarios.

Get counseling if your problem seems overwhelming. A lot of organizations have services that will help you through your own personal problems. Whenever we are not thinking clearly whatever has caused us not to think clearly will only be aggravated if we do not address the issue or make wrong decisions because that problem is overwhelming. Personal problems can create stress and stress definitely is not good for you mentally, physically, socially especially if it is high impact stress. It can play havoc with your health if it is not addressed.

And finally if at all possible keep your job and do the things necessary that help you work through your personal problems with the support of your job, friends, family and your church. People are tolerant and want to see you succeed. More times than naught someone else has gone through the same thing and they will be able to provide the support and possible solutions to work through your issues. We all have them.
