Keeping the Romance Alive in Lake George

Ebie Harris
Lake George is a beautiful town that really comes alive during the summer months. This is a great place to add spice to your relationship. Lake George offers everything from the romantic date right down the the adventurous date.

Find your inner child again and have a date just like you would as a teenager. Choose from miniature golf, arcade games, or head to a theme park. Six Flags Great Escape and Splash Water Kingdom is located right in town. Or simply enjoy the freedom of walking around town without a care in the world. Grab a soft serve ice cream or an iced coffee. Take a stroll over to the little beach located right in the center of town. Hey it is no Caribbean island but it still has its own charm and character.

Turn up the romance with a dinner or fireworks cruise. There are many cruise ships to choose from on Lake George. I went with Lake George Steamboat Company's Minne Ha Ha. This large ship takes you around the waters of Lake George and then drops anchor for an amazing fireworks show. You can watch the fireworks right from the top deck of the ship. The cruise lasts about 1 ½ hours and was just under $20 per person. Bring a blanket even on the warmest summer day because it gets cold up on the deck. Another favorite of mine is a sunset dinner cruise. Sometimes it is nice to change up the same old dinner routine. The one I went on was also part of the Lake George Steamboat Company's fleet; the Lac du Saint Sacrement. For just under $42 a person you get to enjoy dinner aboard this 2 ½ hour cruise, live entertainment, and an on board photo. Food is served buffet style, do not worry about them running out it is plentiful. There are a few intimate tables, but for the most part people are seated at an 8 to 10 person table amongst other passengers. Tickets are sold for the cruise, but the table seating arrangements are done on a first come first served basis.

What better way to spend your time than taking a romantic horse drawn carriage ride. Since 1975 these carriage rides have been operating right in front of Fort William Henry. You board a carriage and enjoy a two mile tour of Lake George. No reservation is necessary, but I did find out you do need to bring cash. When I went the cost was $8 each for an adult. If you do forget your cash there is a small shop located right by where you pick up the carriage with an ATM inside. The carriage ride itself is wonderful, but just be warned that the carriage can seat approximately 5 passengers. If there are others waiting you most likely will be sharing your ride with them (as I did).

Feel like adding a little adventure to your date. Horseback ride down the mountainside. There are many places throughout the Lake George area to take guided trail rides. Hot air balloon rides are another interesting way to spend your time together. You can even work together and help get the hot air balloon off the ground. Bring a picnic basket, champagne, and a camera. I also recommend a hot since you are so close to the heat. My personal favorite though would be parasailing. You are being adventurous, yet since you are hooked to the boat you still have that added feeling of security. Nothing helps romance more than getting your heart pumping.

One of my all time favorite things to do in Lake George to keep the romance alive is camping. I love spending alone time outdoors with my significant other. There are so many camping options to chose from in the Lake George area; cabins, motels on the lake, and good old fashioned tent camping under the stars. What could be more romantic then being curled up with one another by the warmth of the fire. If being outdoors overnight is not your thing then head over to the Great Escape Lodge and Indoor Water Park. Exceptional bedding, phenomenal room service, a lazy river, and a hot tub are all there for you to enjoy. A little pampering, rest and relaxation can go a long ways for romance.

With mountains as your backdrop and old city charm Lake George is a great spot for all lovers. Enjoy some of the hidden gems of the town as you keep the romance going strong.
