Keeping Things Cool During Finals Week

Jon Sugi
College students have finals week each and every semester. And when this time of the year comes around things can become very stressful. And yes I know that things are crazy with the people around you. But what can be done to alleviate some of the tension from the tests around the corner? I want to share some ideas to help relax and refresh students.

Go have some fun. This is really the most important thing I have found. After studying for hours and hours you will begin to lose the information you have worked so hard to retain. Go out and get some dinner or coffee with some friends. Don't worry about if you could be studying at this time. Just take a breather and forget about school for an hour or two.

Sleep during normal sleeping hours. Whatever your normal sleep schedule has been stick to it. If you start pulling all nighters then you will throw your internal clock way off. Sleeping during your scheduled hours does two things. First you can recharge your batteries. And secondly, you can get some away time from the finals. Your body can't handle working on the same thing forever. It gets bored.

Frontload yourself in the first part of the semester. This is a lot to do sometimes but it can save you anguish at the end of the semester. Ask your professor about the final early in the semester. If it is a project then ask for the specifications about the project. Same thing goes for a paper. If the exam is on paper then relax and get to it when its time.

The best thing that has ever helped me during finals week is talking to my professor. Asking them things about the final will really help you. I'm not telling you to ask for answers but ask for study tips. They can lead you in the right direction if you are studying the wrong thing, or focusing on the wrong idea. If the final is a project or paper take them what you have. Ask for a proofread or critique on the project. I did this for my last final project and I know I made an A on the project.

Eating good food does help the finals week quite a bit. The content of the food isn't about the vitamins and good things you are getting from your fruits and veggies. The main reason eating well helps you is that you sleep better, and avoid getting an upset stomach or something else. Your body stays cool and doesn't act up because of the increased levels of stress being put upon it. Also, sometimes you don't feel bad until after the tests are over because you have worked yourself so hard. Eating right definitely helps alleviate this feeling.
