Make Sure You Home is Properly Insulated
Not having your house insulated is one of the main reasons why pipes freeze. Not only that, but it's also one of the main reasons of high electric or gas bills do to the furnace or heater working over time. However, the main thing is keeping our selves warm. If we don't properly insulate our homes, cold air can creep in. To insulate also means to make sure all cracks in windows are closed and all holes in walls are covered. When we do this, we can assure we provide a barrier to allow us to stay warm much longer in the winter.
Make Sure You Heat Supply is Working Properly
If you have an old furnace or heater, or perhaps one that breaks down every once in a while, it's good to have it checked and repaired before the winter comes. You don't want yout heat supply working with 30% efficiency when you most need it, nor do you want it to shut down when you must need it to start up. This will also assure you'll be safer in keeping yourself warm in the winter.
Wear Warm Clothing
One of the most common things in keeping ourselves warm is to wear warm clothing. If it is cold in your house for whatever reason, then dress warmer: put on socks; wear long pajamas; wear long robes if you have to. If you are going outside, make sure you're completely covered: wear mittens, boots, gloves, extra clothes, and whatever else is need to keep yourself warm. You don't want to go outside when its 8 degrees with only a pair of shorts and a tang top.
Consume Hot Meals
Whether you're consuming hot tea, coffee, or cereal, make sure its warm, as the warmth of your food will affect in your body. You don't want to be eating ice cream before you go for a walk in 0 degree weather. Nor do you want to be drinking iced tea when you first wake up in the morning. Make your meals hot. Eat hot foods to make sure your body remains warm as well.
Use Multiple Covers and Blankets
When it's time for bed, make sure you're all covered up. If you need 3 blankets, then by all means. If you need an extra sheet, then go with it. You don't want to fall asleep without anything covering you up, especially if it's in the winter time. Also at night, our bodies are more sensitive to cold; this is why it is always good to stay covered up in the winter. When we use multiple covers and blankets, we also increase our warmth as well.
Those are the 5 keys for staying warm in the winter. You don't want to have your windows open; you don't want to have a furnace or heating not working; you should want to wear warming clothing; consume hot meals; and cover up at night. By doing all these things, you can assure you stay warm even when the weather gets cold.
