Kellogg's Cereal Recall Includes Froot Loops, Apple Jacks, Honey Smacks and Corn Pops

Kellogg's Company is voluntarily recalling breakfast cereals due to a smell from the waxy liner and off-flavor taste. According the the press release, the voluntary Kellogg's cereal recall includes several kiddie favorites, including Froot Loops, Apple Jacks, Honey Smacks and Corn Pops. No other Kellogg's products are subject to this recall.

Which sized boxes of breakfast cereal are included in the Kellogg's cereal recall?

Only those products with a "KN"following the best-by date are affected in these products and sizes. The company notes that "KM" products are not subject to this recall.

Apple Jacks: Two sizes are included in the recall. The 17 ounce package bearing UPC 38000391361 with use-before dates between April 10, 2011, and June 22, 2011, and the 8.7 ounce package bearing UPC 38000391323 with use-by dates between June 3, 2011, and June 22, 2011, were both on the company's recall list.

Corn Pops: Three sizes of Kellogg's Corn Pops were included in the cereal recall, including the 12.5 ounce and 17.2 ounce packages (UPC 38000301095 and 3800039118, respectively), both with use-by dates between March 26, 2011, and June 22, 2011. The third size under recall is the 9.2 ounce package with use-by dates between April 5, 2011, and June 22, 2011.

Froot Loops: Kellogg's Froot Loops were also recalled in three sizes, all with use-by dates between March 26, 2011, and June 22, 2011. The sizes recalled were the 8.7 ounce package with UPC 38000391255, the 12.2 ounce package with UPC 38000391187 and the 17 ounce box bearing UPC 38000391200.

Honey Smacks: Only one size of Honey Smacks was recalled, that being Kellogg's 15.3 ounce package with a use date between March 26, 2011, and June 22, 2011.

What do affected consumers do?

The company is urging customers who are affected by the recall and wish to obtain a replacement product to call their customer support number at 1-888-801-4163 weekdays between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.. The call center may experience a high call volume since the announcement of this voluntary recall. I have typically found that contacting a company on the day of a recall announcement means lengthy call wait times.

In a Consumer Alert posted on the Kellogg's website, Kellogg's is asking customers to not eat the cereal because they "do not meet quality standards." The company believes it has found the cause of the odor-causing substance in the liners that is at the root of the problem. The company notes some reports of diarrhea and nausea related to use of affected product ,and urges consumers who feel that their illness is related to the product to seek a doctor's care.
