Kellogg's Frosted Flakes Vs. Wegmans Organic Frosted Flakes

T. H. Pankey
I hate to admit it, since we decidedly now know how unhealthy it is, but count me among the number of persons counted by Consumer Reports, who, as a child and even into adult years, literally consumed bowl after bowl of " THEY'RE GREAT! " Kellogg's Frosted Flakes. Kellogg's Frosted Flakes got soggy and limp so quick, you had to gobble them to enjoy its sweet crunch. And because you ate those frosted flakes so quick, you didn't feel full after the first bowl; so you ate another and another, sometimes many bowls. While Kellogg's has changed the recipe for its " GREAT " Frosted Flakes over the decades, what hasn't changed is how quickly you have to eat them, again, if you want to eat the frosted flakes while they're crunchy. The same can't be said about a great alternative to Kellogg's Frosted Flakes: Wegmans Organic Frosted Flakes.

Kellogg's Frosted Flakes Vs Wegmans Organic Frosted Flakes ( Crunch )

Comparing the crunch of Kellogg's Frosted Flakes and Wegmans Organic Frosted Flakes after a quick minute of sitting in milk is like comparing the sound you hear when walking on dried fallen Autumn leaves and walking on wet leaves. Kellogg's Frosted Flakes aren't so great, getting soggy and limp quicker than Wegmans Organic Frosted Flakes. Even when comparing the crunch of both frosted flakes immediately upon submersion into milk, because Wegmans Organic Frosted Flakes is noticeably thicker than Kellogg's Frosted Flakes, its crunch is heartier and more satisfying.

Kellogg's Frosted Flakes Vs Wegmans Organic Frosted Flakes ( Taste )

What Kellogg's Frosted Flakes has going for it is " They're GREAT! " tasting, in a sweet-tooth satisfying way. However, once someone eats organic food and then again eats non-organic food, the difference in taste becomes so large it becomes hard to believe you thought you were eating good-tasting food before you started eating organic food. Kellogg's Frosted Flakes tastes great until tasting Wegmans Organic Frosted Flakes. You'd think you had been eating cardboard sweetened with a sickening great amount of sugar, when again eating Kellogg's Frosted Flakes for comparison to Wegmans Organic Frosted Flakes.

Kellogg's Frosted Flakes Vs Wegmans Organic Frosted Flakes ( Sugar )

According to the Kellogg Company, Kellogg's Frosted Flakes has 11 grams of sugars per serving, which is about three teaspoons of sugar in every ¾ cup serving. Wegmans Organic Frosted Flakes is nearly exactly the same. In many circles, even the " Reduced Sugar " version of Kellogg's Frosted Flakes, which has 8 grams of sugars per one cup serving, is far too much sugar; how much more gross and unhealthy three teaspoons of sugar per ¾ cup serving, no matter which brand of frosted flakes.

The big difference is Kellogg's Frosted Flakes has sugar, high fructose corn syrup and malt flavoring as its sugars, whereas Wegmans Organic Frosted Flakes has organic evaporated cane juice and organic barley malt extract as its sugars. What makes Wegmans Organic Frosted Flakes palatable is its sugars are from organic farms and thereafter minimally processed; whereas Kellogg's Frosted Flakes sugars aren't from organic farms and are derived through extraneous processing.

Kellogg's Frosted Flakes Vs Wegmans Organic Frosted Flakes ( Corn )

As you might expect, both frosted flakes are made of corn. The great difference is Kellogg's Frosted Flakes is milled corn, which almost without question is from genetically modified corn; Wegmans Organic Frosted Flakes is made from organic corn meal.

Genetically modified corn is controversial for all sorts of reasons, including health safety, ecological, economic. Organic corn has no valid reason for controversy.

Kellogg's Frosted Flakes Vs Wegmans Organic Frosted Flakes ( Price )

A 15-ounce box of Kellogg's Frosted Flakes costs about $2.79, compared to about $3.19 for a 16-ounce box of Wegmans Organic Frosted Flakes. Upon first glance it would appear there's a big difference in price, with Kellogg's Frosted Flakes .40 cents cheaper than Wegmans Organic Frosted Flakes. Do the math by weight, though, and you see Wegmans Organic Frosted Flakes is about .20 cents per ounce and Kellogg's Frosted Flakes is about .19 cents per ounce, the difference of one penny per ounce. And you thought better-for-you organic food was always so much more expensive.

I'll have to try Wegman' frosted flakes. I love crunchy foods.
