Kellogg's Nutrigrain Cereal Bars: A Review

Brad Kamer
There are days when I am ready to eat a huge breakfast and don't have a care in the world. Those days of course are usually on the weekend when I can sit idle in my pajamas and cook up a decent size breakfast fit for a king. I enjoy cracking a few eggs, baking a few muffins, and maybe even flipping a few flap jacks here and there. The family sure appreciates the effort and family conversation ensues around the happy breakfast table.

Then there are the other five days of the week, were every member of the family is in rush mode. Dads, moms and kids all have their daily routines that involve school and work schedules that cannot be altered. Our diets resort to much quicker prepared fare during the Monday through Friday cycle. The youngest usually opt for bowls of cereal, mini bagels, or even yogurt and fruit. Mom usually does a bagel and coffee and I head out the door with a bagel or my usual standby, the cereal bar.

I usually purchase the Nutrigrain cereal bar made by Kellogg's. These cereal bars come in a variety of flavors such as strawberry, blueberry, raspberry, blackberry, mixed berry, cherry, apple-cinnamon, strawberry yogurt, and Vanilla yogurt. I will usually purchase the mixed berry, strawberry, and raspberry varieties. The bars are sold in 5 ounce portions with eight bars to a box. I usually purchase the Kellogg Nutrigrain bars only when they are on sale which comes down to about $2.50 per box or thirty one cents per bar. I usually load up on two to three boxes during such sales as the regular sales price usually shoots back up to about $3.50 per box.

My overall impression with the Kellogg's Nutrigrain cereal bar is very positive. I enjoy the taste of the berry preserves tucked inside the whole grain chewy exterior. The cereal bar obviously cannot compare to sitting down to bowl of whole grain cereal with milk and berries, but Kellogg's does a darn good job of using quality ingredients as the bars always seem quite moist and the berry filling is always quite tasty. I had endured a few weeks for which the stores did not carry Nutrigrain cereal bars at the discounted sales price, so I resorted to purchasing other cereal bar brands to save a little over a buck a box. There simply is no substituting the name brand cereal bar as the overall quality of the store brand bar leaves a lot to be desired. The generic brands seem to offer a product that looks like a tasty cereal bar at first glance, but initial taste will tell you that such imitations are usually much drier and the whole grain goodness apparently lacking.

I will continue purchasing the Kellogg nutrigrain bar and recommend it for kid's lunches, snacks, and even a good "pick me up" when energy appears low. The cereal bars go great with a tall glass of milk or a hot cup of coffee.
