Kellogg's Pop-Tarts Unfrosted Strawberry Toaster Pastries - a Review

Brad Kamer
I was shopping in the breakfast foods aisle at the local supermarket and stumbled across a traditional toaster item, Kellogg's pop-tarts. I have not consumed a pop tart in what is close to about twenty years and was amazed at how the product line has become so diverse. There seems to be some crazy pop tart concoctions that include the ideas of s'mores, cinnamon brown sugar, and chocolate fudge. No thanks; I kept on perusing that section until I could find the classic unfrosted pastries such as the blueberry and strawberry. Alas Kellogg's still produces the unfrosted Strawberry pop-tart. For old time sake as well as introducing them to my kids, I grabbed a box, finished my shopping and headed home.

Review of Kellogg's Pop-Tarts Unfrosted Strawberry - Taste

Next morning I stumbled down to the kitchen and bypassed the usual nutrigrain bar or bagel. I opted for the new box of pop tarts to see if they still tasted as good as when I was a young lad. The pop tarts seem the same with respect to box size and packaging. The box includes 8 pastries wrapped as two in a foil pouch.

I placed one pop tart into the toaster and baked at a low setting on my toaster to avoid burning the pastry. The pop tart popped out about two minutes later piping hot. After cooling for a minute (so I could handle it), I took a bite. The strawberry pop tart met my expectations as I quickly devoured the entire pastry in about thirty seconds before heading out the door with my coffee in hand. The fruit filling still has a good taste as it is not too sweet. The pastry is light and crumbly and the corners are as brittle as they always were. My children tried out these breakfast items later that morning, and their feedback was very positive. My son enjoyed the strawberry pop tart much more than the Kellogg's nutrigrain bar. My daughter liked them but did not seem as enthused, though she appeared a little remiss when the box was emptied.

Review of Kellogg's Pop-Tarts Unfrosted Strawberry - Convenience

I would say the strawberry unfrosted pop tart ranks high on the convenience scale. They are not as convenient as the nutrigrain bar since I prefer my pop tart toasted before heading out the door. The breakfast treat is ideal as it takes up small space in storage with the box only containing 8 pastries and easily fits in the cabinet or pantry. Additionally there is no refrigeration needed and no utensils required to eat a toasted pastry. I like to prepare them in the morning, wrap in foil to preserve warmth, and eat them on my commute to work.

Review of Kellogg's Pop-Tarts Unfrosted Strawberry - Price

The price of an 8 count box of pop-tarts sold at the store typically sells for two dollars. I have seen the prices go as low as about $1.69 per box during certain sale weeks. The regular price is still exceptionally low in my opinion. That breaks down to a quarter per pop-tart for breakfast. One would be hard pressed to find a cheaper breakfast that tastes as good. The price of a pop tart is much lower than the unit price of sister product, Kellogg's nutrigrain bars which can be rather costly at about $3.50 per box.

I would recommend trying out a box of unfrosted pop tarts but keeping consumption in moderation as this is probably not the healthiest daily morning meal. The good news is the pastries are free of trans-fats and hold steady at 210 calories per pop-tart. The bad news is that they contain a bit of sugar in the fruit filling.

Great review! My favorite variety was discontinued, and I'm not interested in most of the ones currently available. I do occasionally get the unfrosted blueberry.
