Kellogg's Special K Bar Review

Jessica Ann
I have never been one to eat a real breakfast, ever. I don't recall breakfast being a priority as I grew up. I'm not even sure if, when I was little, that we would sit down and eat a breakfast. I do recall that spaghetti was one of my favorite breakfasts when I was little and I don't think my mother ever had any issue with me eating that for breakfast either. As I grew a older and moved out on my own, I found that the spaghetti breakfast was still on the menu, especially after a night of drinking. Hey, to me there was nothing better than starchy pasta to soak up the leftovers of the night before that was still inhabiting my body. Of course, all those spaghetti breakfasts took their toll on my body as I got older so something had to change. The occasional bagel, maybe a couple eggs or an English muffin made its way into my stomach, but more often than not, it was nothing at all. Thank goodness for the Kellogg's Special K Bar that fairly recently came on the market.

Every morning I grab a couple of these delicious bars and head off to work where I will enjoy them with a big glass of milk to get my day going. It also seems it helped me to curb my lunch appetite a little more so I didn't eat so much. The Kellogg's Special K Bar comes in several different flavors, but my favorites are the Peaches & Berries, Strawberry and Blueberry. There is also a Vanilla Crisp, Honey Nut and Chocolatey Drizzle. I'm not a big fan of vanilla or honey and the chocolate on these bars is not a flavor I care for, which I also found to be true with the Special K Bliss Bar which is a berry flavored bar with chocolate on the bottom.

Though each bar only has 90 calories each, plus 20 fat calories, they are a little high in sugar content at 9 grams each. I guess that's why they get me going in the morning after having two, which of course means 18 grams of sugar to burn. However, I'm sure you've all seen the Special K diet plan which involves eating two bowls of cereal, breakfast and lunch, for a couple weeks to see a weight change, and each one cup bowl of this cereal packs a whopping 10 grams of sugar. The Kellogg's Special K Bars do have the benefit of 10% of the daily value of Vitamin B6 which also helps to get your body moving, even if your brain isn't.

Regardless of the fact that there are healthier things I could be eating for breakfast, I love these bars and they are so convenient. The bars are wrapped individually and come in a box of six. Unfortunately, the price of these little treasures has risen to $3.09 at Publix in my neck of the woods. Several stores carry this product and if you keep a lookout you can probably find a deal at another market such as Wal-Mart who often offers them at two boxes for $5.00. They are great on the go as you can eat them anywhere. The only problem I have had with them is that the top side of the bar has a delicious yogurt topping on it which can crumble and land on your lap.

The bottom line is that these are a delicious and quick way to get something in your stomach to start your day with and won't load you up with a ton of unwanted calories. If you suffer from allergies though, keep in mind that these bars contain wheat, milk and soy products. Also note that the Peaches & Berries flavor has golden raisin pieces in it. Every bar has a dietary exchange of one carbohydrate for those of you who need that information.

Whether you decide to try these or not, please remember that it is better for you to eat something with some form of nutritional content in it rather than not eating at all. Of course, if ailing from a hangover, these may not do the trick, so I'll be reaching for that bowl of spaghetti once again.
