On Thursday December 16, Kelly Clarkson performed in Nashville, TN at the Night for Hope benefit concert where she helped raise money for the Houses of Hope orphanages in South Africa and Zimbabwe. During that concert, she debuted a new single, You Still Won't Know What It's Like.
This song is vintage Clarkson with its emotionally charged lyrics and distinctive belting voice. These lyrics were quite fitting for an artist who was trying to raise awareness about the conditions for children in orphanages.
"You don't know the person suffering
So before you start , can't make any of this out, sympathy,
Take a look at what's left of me
Take a look at what's left of me, left of me."
Clarkson's single, You Still Won't Know What It's Like, is part of an upcoming album. Because the head of her label is leaving this month, Clarkson does not know exactly when her next album will be released. And she did not give us any other previews for the upcoming album.
What I love about Clarkson's songs is that while they are always catchy and radio-friendly, they also have a timeless quality. The fact that so many of her songs can appeal to audiences of all ages is testament to her staying power in the music industry. Clarkson's songs appeal to tween audiences, "Glee" fans, and adult contemporary listeners.
Clarkson also has a versatile style. She is able to appeal to both pop and rock audiences. Her upbeat songs are catchy and gritty, while her ballads are powerful and soaring.
American Idol has had a lot of winners and flashy personalities, but more than any Idol alum, Clarkson has demonstrated consistent time-tested appeal. She continues to be the gold standard for aspiring singers on American Idol.
The only other alumni I could see matching her level of success are Carrie Underwood for her accomplishments in country music, Jennifer Hudson for her star power, and Adam Lambert for his larger-than-life stage presence. I could also see young David Archuleta having a long-lasting career if he plays his cards right.
