Kelly Clarkson's My December - Better Than You've Been Told

Skylar Jayne
So here goes, I am so tired of everyone jumping on the Clive train. No one will let this CD be successful because they are afraid of the repercussions of the mighty Clive Davis. Well all I have to say to that is, "get over it." This CD has been out since late July and sold only around 600,000 copies stateside. I say only but I really should have said a whopping, because this CD is being propelled by 1 single released several months ago and the overall essence of Kelly Clarkson. That is actually quite outstanding. All of Kelly's true fans are chomping at the bit waiting for the almighty Clive to bless us with his efforts to make this CD a success when they should be out there self-promoting. It's the best we can do with so little intentional support for one of his top artists.

RCA does have a lot of money wrapped up in this project but the record label is more concerned with teaching Kelly a lesson about being too creative. They are pushing for a minuscule performance simply to bully Kelly into submission, "Make a pop album KC or else." I can see them shaking their finger in her face now. News Flash people, pop albums are out.

All of the bad press given this CD is unwarranted and simply are the tired responses of those still grasping for the attention of Clive Davis. It's ultimately sad and unfortunate for the artist who suffers without reasonable cause.

So maybe I sound a little angry and well truthfully I am. I have found an artist I can truly enjoy, who can actually sing and create music and most of all who looks like a human being not a manufactured pompous overly pampered princess.

I personally would rather have an artist who can sell a couple of million discs every time they drop one over say 10 or 20 years than an artist who can sell a few more million then burn out with the next big musical crazy. If any industry needs cult like consistency it's this one. With music becoming so much easier to get and for so little to nothing you would think they could hang on to some originality.

Now getting to the review; "My December" is an excellent CD top to bottom. It is the kind of music real artists make and while not all of the songs will appeal to all of the people, there is something for everyone on this disc. Yes it's angry yes it's a little rough but it is also packed with catchy hooks and powerful lyrics and all it would take is for the love of God a second single to be promoted for the momentum to pick up massively on this CD. People can and will relate to the contents of this CD and while I admit to still have one song on the disc I can't get in to and another that I simply can tolerate the over all content of the disc is quality and worth a listen or 3. This is not a listen once disc you have to listen to the whole thing I'd say 3 times to find your own way with it but you'll have your favorites right away, I can list you mine.

I'll give you my top 6 songs on this CD, now you can agree with me or you can agree to disagree with me but here they are all the same. Take from them what you wish;

1. Maybe - Amazing Ballad

2. Sober - I love the last part of this song

3. Hole - Should be the next single

4. One Minute - Catchy and very mainstream

5. Yeah - Not what you'd expect and has great flow

6. Haunted - Love the context of the song

So there you go my top 6 now the other songs I do enjoy, How I feel, is a great track the last line of this song is one of my favorites. Be Still, is a good song just not my favorite it is growing on me though. Can I Have a Kiss almost made my top 6 but what would I leave off I do enjoy this song as well. Don't waste your time, a good track. Irvine I just can't get into, too Jewel for me and I love Jewel but that's not who's singing the song.

I am giving the CD the following ratings;

Writing, 4 out of 5 stars

Vocal quality, 5 out of 5 stars

Producing, 3 out of 5 stars

Overall rating I gave it a 4 out of 5 stars

This is a must own CD for 2007!
