Kelly Rowland: oh, how far we have not come. I listened to and gave a fairly positive review to Kelly Rowland's album "Ms. Kelly" from 2007, but everything I respected her for on that album got thrown out of the window on "Here I Am." Is this her or is this an attempt to crash into the pop market and sound like all of the other acts shaking their butts to music that is often times not really music at all? Kelly Rowland has given up the emotional connection she forged with "Ms. Kelly." Boo. My song by song thoughts about "Here I Am" are below. (I was listening to the deluxe version but skipped making commentary on the remixes.)
"I'm Dat Chick": Was somebody taking notes while listening to Beyonce? This song fails as an empowerment anthem and as a song in general. The beat is a weak mess and the song is just: not there.
"Work It Man": Speak English lady, the slang isn't coming off as cool or cute. Or thug, or hip hop, or anything other than stupid. This is a song that just kind of repeats "work it man" over and over again and "he got it" and other crap.
"Motivation": A slow jam that is less smooth singing and more broken effects and mouth sounds. Is Lil Wayne the selling point? Lil Wayne brings nothing.
"Lay It On Me": Some intelligent lyrics please? When you getting off work! Oh, lay it on me, baby. Ohhhh a turd has been laid. Do you lay turds? Eggs get laid. Kelly Rowland laid an egg with this one. The egg cracked and there were turds inside. Lay it down, down duh down.
"Feelin' Me Right": Club this and that and feelin' things and backing' things up and lacks musical value with weak beats.
"Turn It Up": A bitter woman turns to drinking instead of causing trouble for a dude with his new chick. And she wants the music turned up and more shots. THAT could actually be an interesting theme, if it wasn't just a pathetic drum beat and basic effects sounds with no strong lyrics just more repetitive blabber. I could imagine a drunk Kelly Rowland making this song all by herself with a little Casio.
"All Of The Night": Male R & B singers make some ridiculous songs about having sex. Here is the female version of that. Sex jammy-jam-duh-dummy-dumb though. "sometimes you got to do it, don't talk too much, just kiss and touch. Turn me up and keep me bumping." Okay, it works, as long as you are having sex while it plays because if you're having sex it doesn't matter what is playing. The rapper dropping lines is pathetic. I don't feel like looking up his name to spell it right, you can do that if you care.
"Keep it Between Us": Rowland's vocals are not above an American Idol amateur here, but it's someone who makes it on to the show. This song has some nice qualities to it. There is some soul in the lines about giving love away. Rowland is not getting good music production support though as this song goes into a messed up , jumbled up clash of sounds and crap in the beat/ background music; seems like every song thus far has been an ill pieced together Frankenstein monster.
"Commander": A dance floor song and because it is not being sung by Jennifer Lopez it is probably destined not to be as big a hit as it wants to be. Meh. Doesn't make me want to jiggle anything. "You won't find no lady who does it like I does it." - ugh.
"Down For Whatever": A dance floor song that got drunk, tripped, and broke itself.
"Heaven & Earth": This ballad seems Disney cartoon worthy, not an Oscar nominee track though.
"Each Other": Her voice can be pretty when it plays with echo, but the song is basic and not "pretty" at all. I gave it a chance, but Rowland not getting A+ material to play with.

Post a CommentIndeed I am biased against crap. Doesn't mean you can't enjoy your crap just because I don't. My credentials are I have the Internet and am a product buying consumer. How much money an artist makes doesn't signify how great they are at making music. If that is the case Rebecca Black and her "Friday" song are well ahead of the game. Such a pretty song that one, right?
You sound bitter. People who actually have fun and sex enjoy the CD. It's a refreshing break from everything that's depressing right now. Kelly has said she doesn't care about people that want her sound to stay the same and to that I say 'Go Kelly Go'.
