Kelvin Sampson and Indiana Basketball

The NCAA says Kelvin Sampson broke recruiting rules and he lied and the Indiana basketball program is scrambling to stay out of trouble and cover themselves. Will there be sanctions? Probably. There was in Oklahoma basketball when Kelvin Sampson was there. What is a coach thinking when he and his staff break rules? Surely they did not do it again!

Tainted history

Kelvin Sampson was the head basketball coach at the University of Oklahoma for 12 years. He said in 2003 he was going to clean up his act - no more NCAA rule violations. Apparently he and his staff were breaking the rules at the time. It was the general consensus of the Oklahoma sportswriters that Kelvin Sampson is a liar, has a big ego and thin skin. On the court, he is a very good coach.

Current events

Kelvin Sampson convinced Indiana to hire him with some provisions made and it was costly. He pledged to not repeat the recruiting violations he committed in Oklahoma and the future looked bright for Indiana Basketball. Now the NCAA has charged he violated the rules 5 times and has lied. Indiana has until the end of the week to file a report and Sampson has a rebuttal period of time.

Consequences

It is sad to think of the repercussions; heads will roll, jobs will be lost, families will be displaced, sanctions will be imposed and the players will lose. Indiana played admirably the other night and won their game even as the announcers could talk of nothing else but how the Athletic Director at Indiana should be fired, Kelvin Sampson should lose his job and probably his career.
