Kendra Chantelle Campbell American Idol 10 (2011) Top 24 Performance

Kendra Chantelle Campbell is a singer from Tennessee who has performed around the Nashville area. She made it to the voting rounds (Top 24) for the 10th season of the show American Idol. According to Rickey.org, Kendra sang Christina Aguilera's "Impossible" as her Top 24 song.

Initial Thoughts:

I had lambasted Kendra Chantelle before American Idol 10 started. Based on what I saw online, she just doesn't seem to have anything going for her musically except a nice vocal tone. There is some soul there due to that tone, but she seems to be a singer who needs a lot of practice to perfect a song.

And even if she had loads of practice time, very few singers could even hope to pull off "Impossible." It is almost always going to be a watered-down version of the song that lacks the vocal dynamics that Christina brings to her live performances.

I will say that Kendra is probably the most improved contestant from what we have seen on the show. There is some potential there to deliver some nice, bluesy performances. But Idol just doesn't seem to be the kind of place to be learning how to sing better. With so little time, you need to come ready to win.

Prediction:

Kendra Chantelle has hardly been featured on the show except in short clips of her singing. We basically know she has a deep speaking voice. That's about it. There just isn't much there for the fans/voters to root for yet. And unless she has prepared a song like "Impossible" in advance, it's likely to pale in comparison to the original. She apparently got average comments from the judges.

All things considered, it looks like Kendra (singing third in the singing order is no gift, either) is in danger of missing out on one of the top 5 spots. She has pretty much been set up for failure from the start, so anything short of a home run is going to make it difficult to get through to the next round.

Kendra's "Impossible" performance will air on Wednesday, March 2, 2011.

She is doing a pretty good job. Kendra's vocal control and range are pretty good. She doesn't have a whole lot of power, but it was better than Naima and Tatynisa so far.
