Kennedy's Immigration Deal

Democrats Express Serious Concern

f.w.
Democrats have expressed a serious concern over Kennedy's immigration deal. Only two Democrats, Ken Salazar from Colorado and Dianne Feinstein from California, stood beside Kennedy as he announced his new immigration deal. Others that stood beside Kennedy included seven Republican Senators and two Cabinet Secretaries alongside the three Democrats.

Harry Reid, Senate Majority Leader, in a statement expressed serious concern over Kennedy's new deal:

"Their agreement can serve as a starting point for the Senate debate next week.
I have serious concerns about some aspects of this proposal, including the
structure of the temporary worker program and undue limitations on family
immigration. We need to improve this bill as it moves throught the legislative
process."

Reid also questioned in the Senate whether "we're going to be able to pass it."

Democrats have their doubts over provisions to create a temporary-worker program and to reduced the emphasis on uniting families when deciding on which legal immigrants will be admitted to the United States. Democratic presidential frontrunners, Senators Obama, Clinton and former Edwards, reacted very cautiously to the proposed immigration deal. Other House Democrats do not seem to like Kennedy's proposed immigration deal.
