Kenny Florian Vs. Roger Huerta Prediction

UFC 87 Preview and Picks

Roger Huerta is one of the biggest up-and-comers in all of MMA and the UFC, not just in the lightweight division. The Mexican native has brought an entire fanbase into the sport that until recently was all boxing, all the time with very little UFC viewing mixed in.

Many people even believe that Huerta could be a champion in the future of the UFC's lightweight division despite B.J. Penn looming at the top of the heap. Count Huerta himself among that group, as he recently said he doesn't plan to ever lose.

But many people feel that the Huerta vs. Florian fight at UFC 87 could be a loss for the Mexican. While Huerta is flashier, Florian is an expected, steady fighter who is dangerous from all positions in the octagon and who has experience facing some of the best the UFC has to offer.

On top of that, Huerta showed major flaws in his game during his last fight with the hyperactive Clay Guida. Guida some big shots on Huerta and had him dazed on multiple occasions before Huerta came back and secured the comeback victory.

Huerta will have to be careful not make the same mistakes against Florian because "K-Flo" can finish fights in many different ways including using his elbows or his excellent ground game to score the submission.

Florida vs. Huerta is one of three big fights on the night at UFC 87 that have fans of MMA buzzing, including Brock Lesnar vs. Heath Herring and Georges St.-Pierre vs. Jon Fitch for the welterweight title. The Florian-Huerta fight might not be for the title and it doesn't feature an ex-WWE star like Brock Lesnar, but it could have just as many if not more fireworks and entertainment value as the other two big-name fights that are billed by some as co-UFC 87 main events.

Lightweights always put on some of the most entertaining UFC fights around and UFC 87 should be no exception when Huerta and Florian get together. Look for Huerta to push the pace and try to be the aggressor in this one.

While Florian is more polished all-around, he doesn't really have one quality that makes him stand out as a title contender. Huerta has the edge in athletic ability and creativity in this fight. Some are worried he isn't ready to go up against a top contender but many UFC insiders think he has what it takes to win the title.

This fight could go either way and should be very close but I predict that Huerta will win a decision because of his immense heart and ability to overcome adversity within a fight.

Oh, and something else is bothering me too. Kenny Florian's jiu jitsu is world class. He isn't quite BJ Penn, but he is a black belt and a Pan-American silver medalist. He IS flashy with his jiu jitsu and his Muay Thai is excellent. He's got brutal kicks and elbows(trust me on the striking. I'm a kempo black belt and Pa. Golden Gloves winner.) On paper, Florian is better in every single aspect save one-wrestling.

Umm, Huerta is from California. He isn't Mexican. He's Mexican-American, birn and raised in LA.
