Kenny Lattimore's Timeless: Early Album Review

Is Timeless Worth the Wait from Kenny's Last Solo Album in 2001?

The Reviewer
There was a time when Kenny Lattimore was one of the most promising names in R&B music. Ladies fell in love with his silky voice Timeless is Kenny Lattimore's first solo album since 2001's Weekend. Since then he has released numerous albums with his wife R&B singer Chante Moore. The album features Kenny doing his take on cover songs from a variety of artists including Stevie Wonder, The Beatles and Elton John. Will Timeless bring Kenny back to solo success?

The first single off of Timeless is the cover of Norman Connors and Michael Henderson's song You Are My Starship. The song is a mellow and melodic journey and proves that Kenny Lattimore still has that smooth and silky vocal ability.

It Ain't No Use was originally performed by Stevie Wonder. Kenny's version is much smoother than the original. The song has a different vibe but it works very well.

And I Love Her sounds very different than the original version by The Beatles. However, the differences make the song more relevant to the society today.

Come Down In Time is a cover of Elton John's song. The song is one of the better tracks on the whole album. The song feels so new and fresh from Kenny's rendition. The song just puts the listener at ease.

I Love You More Than I Can Say is a re-imagining of the Otis Redding classic. The song has all the bluesy elements of the original however; Kenny's vocal performance just does not live up to the arrangement.

Originally Aretha Franklin recorded the track Ain't No Way. Kenny's version is solid but it is incredibly hard to live up to Aretha's big voice on the original.

Giving Up originally performed by Donny Hathaway is one of the stronger tracks on the album. The song is well produced and is fairly catchy.

Marvin Gaye's That's The Way Love Is, is beautifully redone by Kenny. The track is catchy and well executed.

Even Terence Trent D'Arby is represented on Undeniably. The song is interesting and well made however Terence's unique vocal styling made the song undeniably his.

Overall Timeless is a good way to reintroduce Kenny Lattimore to the marketplace as a solo artist. The songs that he chose to cover on the album are varied and obscure enough for it to work. Overall Timeless gets 7.5 out of 10. If you are a fan of Kenny Lattimore make sure you pick up Timeless when it is available in stores on September 9th.
