Kentucky Derby Party Dishes

On May 2nd the 135th annual Kentucky Derby, the most exciting two minutes in sports, will be taking place. If you can not make it to the event, you can still have a memorable experience by throwing a Kentucky Derby themed party in your very own home. To make the best of your party it's important to have a great selection of foods. Here i've compiled a list of five delectable festive Derby food:

1. Mint Julep

At your party, it is imperative to have Mint Julep. Mint Julep is THE classic Kentucky Derby drink. It consists of the perfect balance of cocktail of bourbon, simple syrup, and mint served over crushed ice.

2. Kentucky Burgoo

When you hear the name, Burgoo, you may not think it sounds like a very appetizing dish- but trust me it is. Kentucky Burgoo is a delicious smokey stew made with meats and vegetables. It is generally cooked outdoors in iron kettles and it takes 12 hours or more to cook. If you have the time, you should definitely make it. If you cook it well, partygoers will be raving about it was for the days following the event instead of talking about the outcome of the actual race!

3.Barbecue Shrimp

It is a must to have barbecued food at your Kentucky Derby party. In addition to the commonplace barbecued meats such as pork and chicken why don't you try making barbecued shrimp? Barbecued shrimp is personally my favorite dish, and it is always a crowd pleaser. This dish should take no more than an hour to prepare and bake.

4.Fruit Salad

Fruit salad is very easy to make and it will compliment your barbecued foods very well. The good thing about it is that it is tasty as well as nutritious.

5.Chocolate Bourbon Pecan Pie

Chocolate Bourbon Pecan Pie is a great way of incorporating classic Kentucky Bourbon into your meal. The chocolate chips in this pie add a wonderful twist to traditional pecan pie.

Well there you have it, five great dishes that will surely make your party a hit!
