Kentucky Derby - How I Pick a Horse

Matt A. Maxx
It is Derby time again! Grab those Mint Juleps and follow me... I'll show you how I pick out my favorite Kentucky Derby horse.

Find Out Who Is Running:

The first thing that you need to know about picking a horse my way, are the names of the horses that are running. Here is the list of Kentucky Derby names that I have:

Cool Coal Man at: 20-1 odds. - Tale of Ekati at: 15-1 odds. - Anak Nakal at: 30-1 odds. - Court Vision at: 20-1 odds. - Eight Belles at: 20-1 odds. - Z Fortune at: 15-1 odds. - Big Truck at: 50-1 odds. - Visionaire at: 20-1 odds. - Pyro at: 6-1 odds. - Colonel John at: 4-1 odds. - Z Humor at: 30-1 odds. - Smooth Air at: 20-1 odds. - Bob Black Jack at: 20-1 odds. - Monba at: 15-1 odds. - Adriano at: 30-1 odds. - Denis of Cork at: 20-1 odds. - Cowboy Cal at: 20-1 odds. - Recapturetheglory at: 20-1 odds. - Gayego at: 15-1 odds. - Big Brown at: 3-1 odds.

Step One:

I set my mint julep on top of my racing form in the middle of the dining room table. I take a seat at the edge of the table and fold a dollar bill into my favorite style of paper airplane. Next, I sail it at my Julep glass. If it goes in nose first I do not scratch the favorite Big Brown at 3-1 odds off of my list. If my dollar bill misses the glass, I get rid of that 3-1 odd horse... he's no fun to bet on anyway.

Here goes... I just missed my glass. Big Brown is now gone from my list.

Step Two:

Next, I look at the first letters in the list of Kentucky Derby horse names from top to bottom, and from bottom to top to see if any of the first letters in the Kentucky Derby horse names will spell a word. Every horse that is smart enough to be a part of a word gets to stay on my list.

Cool Coal Man is gone. His 'C' can not possibly spell a word next to the following 'T'. The next three Kentucky Derby horses can stay because they spell 'cat' going up. Monba, Adriano, and Denis stay too, they spell 'mad'.

Step Three:

My list now reads: Tale of Ekati at: 15-1 odds. - Anak Nakal at: 30-1 odds. - Court Vision at: 20-1 odds. - Monba at: 15-1 odds. - Adriano at: 30-1 odds. - Denis of Cork at: 20-1 odds. Now I have to finish my Mint Julep and pour a new one while the glass is still sitting on the racing form. I can not remove that glass from the racing form or I will jinx my picks. Uh... it spilled. But, it's still on the racing form. Maybe I'm still good.

Step Four:

I will now add up the number of my birthday. M + D+ Year =? Then add those numbers together to end in one single digit number. I come out a 6. I will take my answer and get rid of any horse that has odds that my number can not divide into evenly. If the horse will not cooperate with my birth numbers, there is no reason to believe that he will win a race for me. Right?

So, 6 will not go into 15-1 odds, or 20-1 odds and those odds are gone from my list. My Kentucky Derby horse names are now Anak Nakal and Adriano to choose from.

Step Five:

It is time to count the letters in each of my remaining horse names. If you are following along with me and are trying to use my method to pick a Kentucky Derby horse, decide if you were born on an even or odd day of the month, and keep the horse names on your list that are even like your date, or odd like your date. I am odd, my list does not change.

Step Six:

Now, I am going to write down the first line of the first song that pops into my mind. Beatles: Now somewhere in the black mountain hills of Dakota there lived a young boy named Rocky Raccoon.

I will take each letter in this music line and go between the Kentucky Derby horse names that are left on my list, one letter per horse until I run out of letters. Whoever has the last letter is my winning horse.

And, I'm done. My Kentucky Derby horse pick this year is Anak Nakal at: 30-1 odds.

This is one of the most unique ways of picking horses I've read. If it works, I'll be sorry I didn't...um...think about choosing that horse. Anything is possible and I don't see why your system couldn't work. I'm just going to watch the race and hope every horse finishes without breaking a leg. What happened to Barbaro broke my heart.
