Kentucky State Programs

Kentucky state programs

Kentucky is just one of the 50 states that offer assistance programs for its residents. You may already know about them or you may not. There are more available. You just have to keep your eyes and ears open.

Here is a list of some of the programs Kentucky offers to its residents. Do not be afraid to ask for help if you need it.

Medicaid. Medicaid is a great program for those seeking medical insurance for themselves or for their children. Children who are born with pre-existing medical conditions often cannot receive health insurance through "normal" insurance companies. Medicaid is perfect for those children and parents who do not have employment to provide medical insurance for themselves and their children.

SSI. SSI stands for Social Security income. SSI isn't just for senior citizens anymore. Children or adults who have a medical disability can receive these benefits. For example, my son, who is only 3 years old, receives SSI for his medical conditions. This is a monthly check. Every six months to a year, there is a review of the case.

Cell phone plans. Assurance wireless is a new program provided by Sprint. This wireless company gives customers so many free minutes a month on a mobile phone. To be approved for such a program, you must be receiving some type of state assistance. For example, section eight, medicaid or even SSI.

K Tap. K Tap is a federal program funding cash assistance to those in need. There is several requirements needing to be met before you are approved. I believe that as part of the requirement for this program, a child support case will be opened and you have to do some volunteer work.

Section eight. The section eight program helps families with their housing needs. The program provides assistance with their rent, based upon their monthly income. The monthly income will determine just how much you will have to pay for rent. There are only a few places that accept section eight assistance.

WIC. WIC is women, infant and children program. It helps low- or no-income mothers with children to receive vouchers. These vouchers pay for nutritious foods such as milk, eggs and cheese. There isn't much on the vouchers, but they can help when you have no income to receive even the nutritious foods for your children. They even help pregnant women as well.

Snap benefits. Snap benefits are formally known as food stamps. It is the same program, just a new name. There aren't many requirements for the snap benefits. This program goes by your income as well. Believe me, a program like the snap benefits is great for parents and large families that are having a hard time making ends meet.

These are a few state assistance programs available to residents. If you are not a resident of Kentucky, be sure to check out your local government programs. They are out there and available to you if you qualify. The programs may not be called the same, but essentially they are just the same, just named differently.

If you want to learn more, be sure to check out your local government building.
