Kentucky Unemployment Higher Than Nation's

About 11.2 Percent

Gary Davis
The Kentucky unemployment rate is up again. The Kentucky unemployment rate continues rise; this is not a turn around. The Kentucky unemployment rate is 11.2% which is over a percent higher than the national average.

WLKY.com has posted an article titled "Jobless Rates Up Across Kentucky." Reporting out of Frankfort, Kentucky, we are told that the jobless rate has increased in each and every one of Kentucky's 120 counties.

The lowest unemployment rate was in Fayette County at 7.8 percent while the highest was in Magoffin County at 21.7 percent.

We looked at the economy of Pennsylvania in another article today and found that they are besting the nation running at 8.8 percent unemployment as opposed to about 10.2 percent.

What changes state statistics like this?

All states have an element of manufacturing and you must believe that manufacturing is going to suffer in most states. Pennsylvania and Kentucky are not exceptions.

Delving further we find that Pennsylvania has a tremendous backbone of farming. The products grown are your standard meat, butter, eggs and grains.

Conversely, Kentucky has tobacco and booze. These are items that are not so popular with the country these days and there is bound to be some backlash as far as profitability.

While the Midwest runs about a standard unemployment rate, when you hit Kentucky also you are beginning to Move Southeast. The Southern states are poorer. There is truth to the fact that there is, even today, some carry over from the Civil War.

As I've already written in my home state of Illinois things are above the norm as far as unemployment. We are running at about 11 percent unemployment.

The reason that we are at that high of a rate is that we are heavily into manufacturing and also, we are heavily unionized.

One thing that I must say is that I was surprised at how much shopping was going on Black Friday.

Is it possible that the economy is doing a little better than the numbers are showing?

I certainly hope that is the case. Good news is always welcome these days.

11.2 represents a LOT of families hurting. It's not for everyone, but strange to me that most have a computer but use it mostly for entertainment purposes. There are ways to learn real skills to turn that down-time into online skill-learning time. It's not making me rich, but it is helping me pay some bills and I have knowledge about how to use the computer in a profitable way and I started for the price of a fancy hamburger.
