Keri Hilson in a Perfect World Early Album Review

Does the Gifted Songwriter Deliver as a Solo Artist?

The Reviewer
Keri Hilson is one of the rising songwriters in all of music. She has written hit singles including Britney Spears' Gimme More, Omarion's Ice Box, Mary J. Blige's Take Me As I Am and Timbaland's The Way I Are. Now Keri is poised to release her long delayed debut album In A Perfect World. Is Keri best served behind the scenes or in front of them?

The first single off of In A Perfect World is the melodic mid-tempo Energy. The song is a solid track however it failed to truly connect with the audience. The track works with minimal verses and a strong chorus.

The second single is Return The Favor featuring Timbaland. The song is a solid Timbaland produced track with synths and strong drum pattern. The song just seems to be lacking something.

The third single is the Polow Da Don and Danja produced Turnin' Me On featuring Lil Wayne. The song has skyrocketed into one of the biggest songs in America. The production is catchy and the melodic vocal delivery works on the song. The song is definitely boosted by the guest verse from Lil Wayne.

Danja also produced Knock You Down featuring Kanye West and Ne-Yo. The sheer star power on the track makes up for some of the blandness found on the verses. The high point of the track is definitely the Kanye dropped verse.

Danja and Polow Da Don collaborated on Set Your Money Up featuring Keyshia Cole and Trina. The track finds Keri using use of Ron Browz's vocal effect. The song has potential yet never reaches it.

Change Me features Akon and is produced by Polow Da Don. The track just seems like filler as it is very forgettable.

Intuition is another world inspired Timbaland produced track. The song is one of the better tracks on the album because it is so different.

Polow Da Don also produces Make Love. The song sounds as if it was originally intended for Ciara. However, the track works well and is one of the better tracks on the album.

Slow Dance has a 1980's Prince feel to it. The track is very different than other music that is out now. That difference is what makes the track interesting.

In A Perfect World, benefits from having some of the best producers in the world bringing their best material to the album. Even with all the talent behind the scenes, the album just seems to be missing something. Maybe Keri's personality as an artist is disrupted by all of the talented producers. Overall In A Perfect World gets 7 out of 10. If you are a fan of Keri Hilson make sure you pick up In A Perfect World when it is available in March 24th.
