Kerry Park Offers Unsurpassed Views of the Seattle Skyline

Kerry Park Draws Residents and Tourists Alike in Search of the Perfect View

Kathrine Lloyd
When people see images of the Seattle skyline, they are frequently viewing images that were captured from Seattle's Kerry Park. This is one of the best viewpoints to photograph Seattle. The Space Needle dominates the city's skyline from Kerry Park and there are sweeping views of Puget Sound and Mount Rainier on clear days as well.

Kerry Park is located in Seattle's Queen Anne neighborhood and is frequently filled with an eclectic mix of locals and tourists. The area is energized with those that have never visited the city and those that have lived here and loved it for years. As a photographer, I have visited Kerry Park on many occasions and taken photos of the Seattle skyline and all of its various moods and personalities that change with the weather and light.

I've been at Kerry Park on a number of occasions waiting for the moon to rise behind the city. The mixture of visitors and residents makes for a good time. I've photographed many tourists and couples that call the city home as I've waited on the moon at twilight. When you are hanging around a popular viewpoint with a bunch of camera equipment, a lot of people ask you to take their photo. Generally speaking, they ask me to take the photograph with their camera, but occasionally someone will convince me to photograph them and email them a shot later. It's all part of the experience that I enjoy and I don't mind doing it.

I've been frustrated, sometimes for months on end, when our moody Seattle skies wouldn't cooperate during a full moon. Last summer, for some reason I became determined to capture the moon rising as the sun was setting and the only time the conditions aligned to make it possible was when there was a half moon. I thought I was going to be somewhat disappointed with the results and I couldn't have been more wrong.

I arrived at Kerry Park with a smile on my face as I watched all of the people gathering in hopes of seeing the same thing I had come to photograph. There were children playing in the grass and tourists taking turns at the viewing scope as the sun faded and the lights of the city began to glow. People from all walks of life had converged in the same spot in hopes of seeing the same thing and we all got what we came for. As the light slowly drained from the sky, the city lit up in a magical way as the moon slowly rose and hovered over the city. It really is a sight to see whether you are visiting or have lived here your entire life.

Kerry Park is located at 211 Highland Drive and is open 24 hours a day. The views are different during the day and night as well as with the changing weather. Make a point of stopping by to absorb unsurpassed views of the Seattle skyline and the magical energy of the people there to enjoy and photograph it.

It's nice to be able to see the other side of the U.S. I don't think I'll ever get over that way, but it's nice to be able to read and see photos about it on AC. :)
