Kevin Skinner, Chicken Catcher Now a Money Catcher

America's Got Talent

Claire Luna-Pinsker
Kevin Skinner, a thirty-five year old chicken farmer from Kentucky won, 2009, "America's Got Talent." The humble chicken catcher is now a money catcher. His voice was humble but soul stirring when he performed country music and played his guitar. The world's stage with all the fame and glory can now be his, his moment in history, because Kevin fulfilled his dream by auditioning with his country singing voice. How he handles the pressures of being front and center remains to be seen. Will his humble, quiet nature remain? Will the idea of fame and monetary success change him? Questions, Kevin Skinner, will have to face as he's paraded around in front of the media.

Kevin Skinner beat out Barbara Padilla for the top prize in, "America's Got Talent."

Barbara Padilla was also a front runner with her powerful, emotional opera voice, but I think she was loved and appreciated even more because of her dramatic life story. She's a wife and mother who beat breast cancer to become a survivor, and then decided to reach for her dream to share her beautiful voice with the world. Last year's, "America's Got Talent," winner was also an opera singer, Neal Boyd. 2009, "Britain's Got Talent," winner was also a powerful classical opera singer, Susan Boyle, who debuted her voice for the first time on America's stage, September 16, 2009 on the finale of, "America's Got Talent." Kevin Skinner's voice was uniquely different.

Kevin Skinner, I believe, is a personal symbol of what America needs to believe in. His story is about someone who was a humble hardworking man who worked in a relatively unassuming job to get by day to day. How many people would allow themselves to be called a chicken catcher? But Kevin Skinner also had a marvelous secret gift, his voice. By chance he got an opportunity to break out of his shell and go for his dream. To see these sincere people succeed, gives us all hope we can achieve our own dreams. We enjoy seeing the underdog win. Kevin Skinner, in my opinion didn't have the best voice in the competition, or the best bubbling personality. In fact it was rare to see a beaming smile on his face, but he still revealed his natural good heart and warm hearted nature. Kevin Skinner seemed to really appreciate standing on the, "America's Got Talent," stage, and acted earnestly humble receiving the praise and adoration from the judges and audience.

"America's Got Talent," provides a setting for all people to attempt their chance to shine, unlike any other reality show on television. Some contestants I do admit should keep their talents hidden behind closed doors, but they also give us a chance to laugh, a chance to laugh at ourselves, and also laugh when our personal lives may be trying. Too many reality shows are train wrecks. Watching people destroy themselves on television may be fascinating to some viewers, hence their popularity, but you leave the show with nothing. Kevin Skinner's, Neal Boyd's and Susan Boyle's stories can be shared with a more positive nature.

"America's Got Talent," is giving, Kevin Skinner, a million dollars and a headlining appearance at, Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino, in October of 2009. The chicken catcher has his big chance to become a money chaser, become successful at what he loves to do. Hopefully, "America's Got Talent," will set Kevin up with good people to face the spotlight, because America has voted and decided, Kevin Skinner, represents our country's best talent.
