Key Moments from the People's Choice Awards

The People Have Voted

Dani D.
When I sat down to watch the 2010 Peoples Choice Awards I thought Ok I'll watch then write an award show article, like so and so won and so and so presented, but as the show proceeded I soon realized this article would be much better if I just did and OP-Ed. It seems like everyone has an opinion these days and I am no different.

§ The Queen, Latifah that is, hosted the show and was able to do an opening performance which was one of only 3. I wish that other rappers of the past would take notes on her and sing American standards or jazz songs like she does now. I mean I just don't see it being cool to be a 40 year old plus rapper. I am glad she transformed into this wonderful actress/singer that is accepted by the general public and the People's Choice producers must like her too since she hosted previously like during the writers strike when the show didn't get to go live.

§ Mariah Carey won for Favorite R&B artist, which she was nominated along with Beyonce and I was intrigued by the fact that she won. Don't get me wrong I am a HUGE Mimi fan, but it seems like 2009 was Mrs. Jay-Z's year even if Mariah beat Elvis in more number one singles. After I got over the initial wonderment of Beyonce's lost, I became even more bewildered from Mrs. Cannon's drunk like approach to the stage and acceptance speech. It's not so much that she seemed to have alcohol in her system, but something was in her that made her seem shaky. She thanked hubby Nick Cannon for walking her up to the stage, because her dress was causing so much drama, but something seem wrong with one of her eyes and she seemed very puffy...not fat but puffy like she was carrying fluid. I hope she is alright because as I said before she is one of my faves and I don't want to see her go through another "over exhaustion" situation. Also from what I can see Nick Cannon actually seems like a great husband to her.

§ After this moment I wasn't entertained again until George Lopez came out to announce the nominees for Favorite Movie Actress when he joked: "These are five women in America that haven't slept with Tiger Woods." Sandra Bullock won this award and jokingly said: "I would like to make a correction; there were only four women who didn't sleep with Tiger. This was very funny, but I hope Tiger gets some peace soon, I am sick of the story.

§ Mary J. Blige performed her single "I am" and I have to say that it sounded better live than when I hear it on the radio. When I hear the song on the radio I cringe, and I thought I would during her performance but she was really good.

§ Taylor Swift won for Favorite Female Artist, and I really waited for Kanye West to come out of no where (or someone else as a joke) since Beyonce was again in the same category, but nothing like that happened to her this time around and I found her comment: "What a beautiful way to start out a new decade," to be one of the best of the night aside from Hugh Laurie's: "If you're chosen by Americans that's a pretty decent group of people to be chosen by." SIDE NOTE: Isn't it funny that there are 3 Hugh's in Hollywood who are foreigners with terrific accents.

§ Somewhere in the middle I became bored and checked my Facebook account, next thing I noticed Johnny Depp was winning for Favorite Movie Actor and being honored for winning the most awards in general and the show was over.

Overall the show wasn't awesome, but it wasn't a total dud. I am always wondering if the celebrities really care about the people who have voted for them. They seem sincere when they give their speeches, but they are actors and performers. I guess they better be sincere though considering the "people" are the ones who by the albums, DVDs and movie tickets. I can't wait for the Oscars and Grammy's to see who the "professionals" think are the best in movies and singing. In the meantime I will wait and see if Mariah's camp says anything about her bizarre behavior.
