Initially, a key dietary recommendation in the addressing of acne is to avoid sugar, trans fatty acids, milk, fried foods, and iodine. There are other suggestions that may aid in the treatment of acne and one is the topical treatment with tea tree oil or azelaic acid. Both have produced positive results much like benzoyl peroxide but without the side effects.

Certain vitamins, minerals, and herbs are essential for the maintenance of skin health. A number of skin disorders can be traced to vitamin deficiencies. In regard to acne, there isn't any one supplement that will specifically provide a cure. As there are nutrients that will assist in the wellness of the skin, some research indicates these same nutrients may assist in the improvement of acne. Antioxidants such as vitamins A, C, and E are and have been the source of many studies resulting in many different theories. Some research has indicated that these antioxidants are beneficial for the skin but as always, the decision must be your decision and with the consultation of your doctor.

Vitamin A is the supplement that is most widely used in prescription acne drugs such as Retin-A and Accutane. Specific levels of vitamin A are necessary for maintaining good skin health. It is used to moderate sebum production. Consequently, some dermatologists use high doses of vitamin A to treat acne. Doses of 300,000 International Units per day for about five months are used for treatment but this must be under the supervision of the physician. These high doses can be very toxic and can cause serious side effects. Again, extreme care should be taken when using this amount and only under the care of your doctor. The vitamin E is essential for the appropriate function of vitamin A. The recommended suggested amounts of vitamin E are indicated with the purchase.

Vitamin B is important for the function of enzymes within the body. They help in energy production, hormone synthesis, and nerve transmission. For best results, it may be wise to take all the B vitamins together but three have been isolated as acne remedies. Niacin has been used to treat skin inflammation, pantothenic acid may have an effect on the sebum production, and pyridoxine assists in the metabolism of steroid hormones. These B vitamins may have an overall positive effect on the skin's health.

Selenium, actually a mineral, helps the body use vitamin E. The suggested amount normally is taken but some doctors may suggest a higher dose for treatment. As with vitamin A, higher doses can be toxic so care needs to be taken. Side effects may be hair loss or brittle fingernails. Zinc, another mineral, seems to provide skin benefits. It helps with inflammation and regulates testosterone. It also helps with vitamin A function.

Then there are a couple of herbs that may also be beneficial for the treatment of acne. One must be aware that herbal remedies are prepared from a variety of materials and are not FDA regulated. This also means that they may come in unpredictable strengths and their active ingredients may vary significantly. Again, use only under the direction of your physician. The two herbs that may be beneficial for acne are Saw Palmetto and Vitex. Saw Palmetto is a berry that is not only beneficial for prostate health but acts as an anti-androgen supporting healthy skin. Vitex is a fruit extract used as an acne treatment in Germany. It seems to be effective in treating premenstrual acne by regulating two pituitary hormones.

Acne is the most common skin problem and is most common among males during puberty but effects females just as well. Maintaining a good diet with the appropriate supplements, regular exercise, and plenty of rest under the supervision of a physician may greatly increase the chances of promoting healthy skin.
