There is never a bad time of year to go to Key West. If you are looking for the intense crowds then you want to go during the heat of the summer months of June through August. Quieter times can be found on the shoulder season of spring and fall, careful for Spring Break that mostly falls in the middle of March for 2010. They will mostly stay to Smather's Beach near the airport and Fort Zachery Taylor. Avoid those areas and you should be fine.

Smather's Beach also happens to be a great Key West beach and it is free. There are many reasonably priced hotels near the beach so if you are looking for an economical spot in Key West, stay near the airport. You can picnic there and play volleyball.

Try to avoid the Duval Street T-shirt shops and fast-food places on Tuesday, most weeks there are multiple cruise ships in port and the streets are packed.

If you are going to play golf in Key West plan to schedule your tee times early in day or later. The midday sun can be torturous so plan accordingly. Take lots of water to drink out on the course and wear a hat. Don't forget the bug spray, the mosquito's can be a killer.

You can't go to Key West without going to the sunset celebration at the pier on Mallory Square. The free celebration at the end of Duval Street and you will see musicians, artists and lots of street performers

Another Key West celebration is the Fantasy Fest being held this year from 10/22 to 10/31. This is a ten-day event in October that culminates with the Old Town parade that is attended by over 50,000 celebrants from around the world.

If you would like to see more of the Florida Keys you can fly into Miami International Airport in Miami, FL and then rent a car and drive down to Key West. It is about a four hour drive and it is gorgeous, there are a couple toll roads along the way.

Do not miss the pastries at the bakery Croissants de France in Key West at 816 Duval Street. The tarts, brioches, and crepes are wonderful but do not miss the fluffy croissants. Pastries are just a couple dollars each.
