1) First come up with a list of 5- 10 personal words that you and the child feel must be included in the poem. Depending on the age of the child your input may be little or much. For example if little Johnny has a favorite toy or bedtime story be sure to include the name in your list.
2) Now take the words list and choose your first word. Example Thank you mommy for nights of Little Red Riding Hood,
Lying so close and hearing you voice I feel so good.
It may take a few times to find the right rhyme but if you get stuck remember to take the last word of the sentence, in this case hood and run through the alphabet until you find a rhyming word then simply build a sentence around it. Continue this pattern for at least 3-4 stanzas. ( A stanza is four sentences basically) For a small child even one verse would be sufficient, I am just naturally long winded as you can see.
3) Now gather some crafting supplies, again this should be age appropriate and I would suggest simple construction paper, gliter, magic markers, glue, safe scissors, paper doilies and perhaps some personal photos. For the more technicalogically advanced there are many different computer software packages out there that you could use and produce professional looking cards. An office supply store would be a good place to find this.
4) Cut the construction paper to the desired size, this should be limited only by the imagination. You could even glue several sheets together to make a huge card. If you use the paper doilies you can trim the frilly edges to make your border or center it upon the paper and use it as a contrasting writing surface.
5) Finally decorate to your hearts content, the great thing about homemade is it does not have to be perfect so let little Suzy or Johnny go wild! They will love it and I promise mom will too.
