Keys to Practicing Basketball

Jacob Malewitz
Practicing basketball might be one of the more tiring professions around. On the other hand we can go easy on ourselves and not do the running-just the shooting. Basketball stands as one of those sports that can be practiced and played by a sole person. Football needs at least one other, and it's hard to play baseball by yourself. In this article we will focus on shooting, dribbling, running, and other mechanics that can turn an inexperienced player to someone with the potential to play.

Everyone sees the dunk and the step back three, but the basic jump shot is key for any basketball player. If we are short the jump shot is key; the lack of height makes it important for the shooter to rise above the player. If we are tall it is still beneficial to learn the basic jump shot because there is always someone taller like Yao Ming or Shaquille O'Neil. Here is a rundown. The jump shot should be one motion that is instigated by the legs and the rising of the hands. Once we find the one motion we are ready to play anywhere. The next shot to learn is the step away three, which is crucial for guards. We can practice this in our own court by stepping a several feet away from the basic foul line shot. The key is the first dribble, which allows us the room to step forward. Once we have the dribble we can make the shot either a regular shot or a jump shot; depending on how close the defender is.

Dribbling is the next step, and one that has evolved the most. We may be called fancy for dribbling between our legs, but there it not only guards the ball but also is good practice. A typical drill used at basketball camps is the "spider" where we lower ourselves to the ground and move our hands and the ball around in various motions between our legs.

To be on any basketball team, even in a pick up game, the player will need to work on stamina and strength. A simple drill which can help us run and jump is running up stairs. This is all good and allows for a quick ten to fifteen minute sweat to build. Running will evolve into jogging, but just like stamina, speed is key. We might work out at the local track on our sprinting, which should help the speed issues.

The last step will be on basic mechanics. A player should consider changing their shot from below there head to level with it or above. This guards the ball better; and is used by many top athletes. Also, there are special shoes that can be purchased to increase our jumping power.

Practicing basketball is an endurance test that not everyone can perform. The point is this: If you are steady with these drills, you will improve; and find that basketball is one of the better ways for someone not healthy to become healthy.
