Kid and Dad Friendly Treats for Mother's Day

Treats that Kids and Dads Can Make on Their Own

Kara Kelso
Ah Mother's Day. The one day of the year all moms are rewarded for the things we do every day for our families. For this special day, we need some special treats to go along with it.

Now since Mother's Day is suppose to be mom's day off, we need treats that kids (and those helpless dads) can make on their own. With minimal mess, of course, because we don't want to get stuck cleaning up after them! This is suppose to be OUR day to relax, not our day to clean up the kitchen.

The easiest desserts your kids and hubby are going to make will probably come right out of a box. The finished result doesn't have to be boring though, since the kids and you can have some fun decorating.

Below are a few different ideas of what you can do with a simple cake mix. Make sure you have the ingredients for the cake mix before you start, since you don't want to be running to the store for last minute supplies. Most cake mixes will need eggs and oil, but some might require something extra. Pick up the extra ingredients when you pick up the cake.

Edible Flowers

What you'll need:
Cake mix, any kind
Cupcake liners and/or muffin pan
Vanilla frosting (2)
Food coloring

Mix up the cake mix according to the directions on the box, then pour into muffin pan/cupcakes. Bake and let cool. Arrange the cupcakes like a flower, with one in the middle and several around it to look like flowers. The cupcake in the middle should be a different color frosting than the "petals". You can use a color like yellow for the middle (or leave white), and decorate each flower a different color like pink, blue, and orange. Eat and enjoy!

Mom's Cake

What you'll need:
Cake mix, any kind
Frosting, any kind
Candy (for decoration - this could be jelly beans, kisses, M&Ms, or any type of candy that's mom's favorite)

Bake the cake according to the directions. Cool and frost. Let the kids decorate the cake with mom's favorite candy in different designs. Suggest things like flowers, hearts, and other designs. Watch their imagination shine and see what they come up with!

These are two very simple ideas for the kids and dad to make in the kitchen while you kick back and enjoy the day. If nothing else, you can always hand them a box of cake mix and see what they come up with. After all, the best Mother's day gifts are those that the kids give you.
