Kid Friendly Family Activities to Do Near Branson, Missouri

Family Fun Geared Toward an Entire Family Ages 8 to Adult Near Branson, Missouri

Kristen Wilkerson
While Branson's claim to fame has historically been a Christian and country focused domain, the city expanded its shows and entertainment to include a larger audience. Considered by some as the "Vegas of the Midwest without the sex", Branson, Missouri, offers many family oriented, kid friendly shows as well. This article shares a sampling of kid friendly entertainment that delights adults as well.

Shows

First of all, choosing a family oriented show that engages children, youth, teens, and adults has always been tricky. Yet, there are two shows in particular that were geared toward all age ranges.

One of the Branson shows is a magician / illusionist named Kirby VanBurch. Kirby has won the Merlin Award more often than Houdini, and awes his audiences with class. His featured guest is a Royal white tiger that magically appears on stage. In addition, he makes a real helicopter appear on stage in less than three seconds. The Kirby VanBurch Show also offers a subtle Christian message. For example, during the show Kirby involves a younger child to help with an act. Afterward, Kirby gave the child a necklace with a biblical saying on it, like the one he wears. His mix of working fire and water into his illusions makes for an excellent family friendly show.

A second family friendly show is called Yakov's Moscow Circus Dinner Experience. Based on a children's tale about a Russian circus, a ballerina and clown fall in love. They defeat all odds to come to America to pursue their American dream together. The acts are incredible, including fire, bubbles, dogs, birds, and fantastic dancing. The best part, however, is the black lit audience interaction segments. Giant florescent balls bounce among the crowd, and the performers' costumes glow as well. During intermission each audience member is served a Russian meal in a glow-in-the-dark cardboard box. The adult meal contains meatballs, mashed potatoes, tomato soup, and peach cobbler. Children respond with delight, and many adults actively participate as well.

Ghost Tour

If looking for more than family oriented shows in Branson, MO, the downtown area hosts a nightly Branson Ghost & Haunt Tour. Children as young as eight participated in the tour. It is a walking and historical tour during which participants are led to various locations of downtown Branson. They pause at a few of the buildings which survived the city's large fire, and attempt to take photographs of ghosts or orbs. Since it is dark during the tour, children believe many of the tales and even adults begin to question particular shadows or noises in the night.

Historical Day Trip

Finally, during the day a historical family activity awaits a bit north of Branson at the Wilson's Creek National Battlefield. The park has an excellent museum with memorabilia of the Civil War battle on display, including a confederate flag. Drive through the scenic loop, stopping at various battle sites and structures from the battle. Experiencing this together truly emphasizes the historical significance of the Civil War to all family members.

While these places are merely a sampling of family oriented destinations in Branson, Missouri, they are a springboard for making memories in the area.
