Planting a garden with the children can not only teach them valuable lessons about the earth but can capture the attention of children from the ages of two to twelve. They can learn how to cultivate their green thumb and plant food that we eat every single day. This would be a great time to incorporate the children in landscape planning as they can be a part of the process from the very beginning. First, plan a poster board size of the yard, planning where the garden is going to go. Next, include the children in the tilling, and creating of the garden area. You can include fences, patio stones and other decorative elements before visiting the local greenhouse and choosing which plants are going to be sowed into the garden. This is great time to include those children that like to plan, have an eye for detail and like to learn about the earth. This task should span over a few weekends, in parts so that the children do not get bored with the task.
Installing sod or new grass can be child-friendly if you allow them to do the parts of this task that they would enjoy such as watering the sod after it has been applied or unrolling the sod onto the ground. This task is best for older children who understand that the sod is very delicate, and can become ruined very easily. This is the perfect chance to bond with your child, and teach them about landscaping and do-it-yourself projects.
Installing a pond with fish in the back yard can be fun, especially since this task includes a visit to the pet store to pick out the fish that the child would like to see in the pond. The child can help to dig the hole and learn how such things as pumps and water hoses work while learning about this pond. The child can be choose the rocks that go at the bottom, or the elements on the outside of the pond while being included in the process.
Creating a play area for the children can be fun when they are allowed to plan the space with the elements that they would like. Everything from assembling the jungle gym, to laying down gravel could be exciting as the child anticipates the finished project. There are many parts of this activity that the child will enjoy, much like the memories included when you built your first tree house with your father.
