Kid-Friendly Summer Landscaping Projects

The great thing about kids is they have an insatiable appetite to learn and help. They love to be a part of something, and landscaping is no exception. Involve your kids in your landscaping plans this season, and create lasting memories that everyone will remember for years to come. Here are a few kid-friendly summer landscaping projects. Window boxes are great not just for windows, but placed along wooden railings or atop poolside tables; they make beautiful decorative touches to any landscaping theme. Let your kids have their very own box to fill with whatever flowers the want. Let them design it and do all the planting themselves.

For an added touch, that will make the project a little more personal, purchase a wooden window box, and allow them to paint it prior to planting. The same can be done with terracotta pots.

You might not think kids are strong enough to help plant fruit trees. You'd be right if you were thinking all there is for the kids to do is place the tree into the hole. Even though the trees might be too big and bulky for the kids to haul around, they're probably better at digging holes than you are. Give them a shovel and let them dig their little hearts out. After the tree is settled into its new resting place, let the kids water it.

Spreading mulch is usually part of many landscaping projects. Teach the kids to be cautious around shrubs and plants and let them spread this decorative material on the flower beds and around trees.

Let them create their very own flower bed. Whether it is next to their clubhouse or you give them a certain section of yours, they'll have fun designing and planting it. Teach them the difference between perennials and annuals, and help them select a variety of flowers to plant. They'll get a great sense of accomplishment as they watch all their efforts sprout up through the ground.

There are few things to remember when doing landscaping projects with kids.

No matter how perfect you envisioned the finished project would look, it probably won't look like that. Your kid's definition of what perfection is won't match yours. Be sure to compliment them on all the efforts regardless of how haphazard the finished product may appear.

Prepare yourself for a mess, not only the work area but the kids as well. Digging in the dirt is almost like a right-of-passage for kids. Even though you'll be guiding them through their project they're still apt to make a mess of things.

Kid-friendly landscaping project are not only great fun for the kids, watering and weeding their little projects will teaches them the basic mechanics of how to take care of something.
