Kids Activities: Things to Do Besides Computers, Technology or TV

Traditional Methods for Keeping the Kids Busy!

Lyn Vaccaro
The technology age has made parents jobs somewhat tougher than those who paved the way before us with regard to engaging our children in other activities to stimulate their creativity and also keep them in the loop socially via conversations and interaction with other kids and people in general. In the following paragraphs I've outlined several things to do besides computers, technology and T.V., by implementing more traditional methods for keeping the kids busy and stimulated mentally.

Art

If you want to stimulate your child's creativity, consider an art activity. From painting to drawing to clay, you can assist in creating a healthy artistic soul within your child that just might help him or her become interested enough to enjoy that as a past time rather than the computer or other technology products. Start by asking your child which art form interests him/her most and take it from there.

Sewing

Sewing is probably more interesting to girls than boys. Although I've known some men that did it regularly as well. You can get lessons through any local technical college or many times classes are offered through retail stores that specialize in sewing and sewing products like JoAnn's Fabrics or other similar businesses.

Playing Cards

I remember playing cards as a child all the time. I almost never see that sort of activity going on with kids. Recently I showed a couple of my own children how to play Crazy Eights. Remember that game? Once they got the concept down, we had a great time playing that card game. With all the games to choose from you can easily spend an hour on a game or two.

Telephone Line

At my house, my teens will actually get involved with this game because it's so much fun once the end result is known. This is better with a larger number of people, to mess things up.

Everyone sits in a circle and the leader picks a phrase to whisper into the person's ear that's sitting directly next to them. Then they whisper it to the person next to them, and so on. It's fun to see what the last person says the phrase was. Generally, it's nothing like what the phrase started out to be

Board Games

Board games are a pleasant social way to bring the family and friends together for some fun. If you can get involved as the parent, all the better! There's so many of these products that are quite stimulating to your childs intellect and you can't go wrong with what it does for staying social and interactive with others.

Thinking of things to do other than computers may take a bit of forethought, but if you're a baby boomer like myself, you won't have too much trouble coming up with solutions from pre technology times that will help you battle the ever present technology era.

Very glad you're on top of this! Technology has such a HUGE negative side for kids.
