Kid's Choice Awards 2009: Nickelodeon Supports Chris Brown as Petition to Remove Him Circulates

Rebecca White-Glanders
This year, the buzz around the Nickelodeon Kid's Choice Awards is all about movies, music and . . . domestic battery? With the Kid's Choice Awards coming up on March 28th, the popular kid's network has placed itself in the middle of a fiery controversy by continuing to support singers Chris Brown and Rhianna as KCA Award Nominees, despite their network's focus on kids and the domestic battery charges Brown is facing.

Chris Brown has been charged with the vicious beating of his girlfriend, singer Rhianna, last month. Shocking photos of Rhianna's bloody and bruised face were leaked online, and police reports were released alleging Chris Brown beat Rhianna's head against a car window and repeatedly bit and punched her before threatening to kill her. Brown, who has issued an apology, seems to have no actual concept of what he has done, as he appealed to kids for KCA votes on his MySpace page the same day he appeared in Court. After the beating, Rhianna received worldwide sympathy and support until publicly reuniting with Brown a few weeks later. Unfortunately, Nickelodeon has said they will let the kids decide who wins, essentially giving boys and girls the message that it's okay for him to beat his girlfriend, as long as they like his music.

Whether or not he wins an award, Nickelodeon will likely be Chris Brown's first real reappearance in the award show circuit - an effective stamp of approval. The message boards on the Nickelodeon website show a shocking number of posts supporting Chris Brown as favorite male singer, and absolutely nothing negative, suggesting the message boards are being policed by Nickelodeon staffers to remove negative posts about Brown or the beating of Rihanna.

This year, the controversy is not about teen stars and pregnancy, half-naked photos, drunk driving or even drug use. This is about a singer who allegedly beat his girlfriend, leaving her a bruised and bloody mess. I, for one, have no desire to watch Chris Brown smiling at the Kid's Choice Awards this year, with a recently healed Rhianna at his side. Our children deserve better than that, and Nickelodeon should be ashamed of the role models they're promoting.

A petition is being circulated online to remove Chris Brown and Rhianna from the Nickelodeon Kid's Choice Award nominations. You can show your support and sign the petition here or call Nickelodeon at (212) 258-7579.

It is still amazing to me that everyone has jumped on Chris Brown and there still has been no supporting evidence that he did what he's accused of doing. People are funny...The constitution has granted us "innocent until proven guilty", but as soon as an accusation has been made, you are automatically guilty "until you can PROVE your innocence". Let the tables be turned and the accusations be on us, we want people to believe in us, regardless of what's being said about us. Perhaps it will please the writer to know that Chris Brown voluntarily dropped out of the awards, regardless of the fact that his fans, the kids, still believed in him. However, the "recently healed" Rihanna is still in the running. A shame that no one wants to really know the truth.
