Kids' Craft Activities for Grandparents Day

Every proud grandparent has a wealth of photographs of their grandchildren; why not make this Grandparents Day special with a custom crafted photo frame? You can construct your own frames from scratch or reinvent an existing frame with paint or decoupage. For an even more customized touch as a home for a specific photograph, glue on scrapbook embellishments, game or puzzle pieces or any suitable small ephemera item.

A cleverly decorated scrapbook that marks special occasions like baby's first step will provide doting grandparents with many pleasant hours when they peruse through pages of firsts and holiday memories. Be sure to ask your child what they remember about a day or event depicted in a photo and journal the details of special moments and funny stories. If your child is old enough let them create the journal entry in their own hand. Attractive scrapbooks can be assembled quite economically with supplies from dollar and discount stores.

Handprint art is a great Grandparents Day craft that can be repeated periodically as children grow. For a twist, place a small amount of paint in a few different complimentary colors in a pan and swirl slightly to partially blend. Have your child carefully place one hand at a time in the paint and then onto a large sheet of paper. When it dries have your child sign his or her name and include the date and their age. In keeping with the same theme, garden stones with your child's hand or footprints make a nice gift that will be enjoyed for many years to come. These are easily made from a kit you can purchase at your local craft store.

Almost all children love to draw. Ask your child what some of his or her favorite memories are of time spent with their grandparents and then have him or her draw pictures for each memory and place them in a portfolio. Let your child present their gift and explain what each of the pictures represents. Be sure to have a box of tissues on hand just in case.

What proud grandparent wouldn't love wearing their own custom designed shirt? Your child can create a design directly on a shirt with dye stick crayons or fabric paints which you then heat set with an iron, or you can scan one of their many artistic creations and use your printer to create a heat transfer to be ironed on to a T-shirt or Sweatshirt. Be sure to reverse (flip) the scanned image before printing so that when it transfers to the shirt it doesn't end up oriented opposite of the original design.

Craft activities are not only fun for kids, they are a great way to keep a group of children busy and entertained at family gatherings while creating something special with which to honor their grandparents.
