Kids Craft: Make Seashell Magnets

Looking to Hang onto Summer a Bit Longer? Make Seashell Magnets with Your Child!

Would you like a craft that lets you enjoy summer all year long? Then making seashell magnets is a terrific craft for your family to try. This craft uses seashells that your children have collected over the summer to create magnets you can use on your refrigerator or for other projects.

This is a great craft for remembering your summer vacation. This is also a nice craft for children to make for their grandparents. This can be a fun craft to make while on vacation if you are staying at a beach house and looking for something for the children to do on a rainy day when they can't get outside and play on the beach.

For this craft you will need:

Seashells

Magnet strips or magnet dots (found at your office supply store, or large craft store)

Permanent markers

Non-toxic glue

Brushes

Glitter (various colors)

Begin this craft by gently washing your seashells to be sure they are clean and free from any marks. Dry them with a paper towel. Let them dry completely before beginning the craft. Place newspaper down on the surface you are working on to protect the surface. You are going to be working with glue and glitter and you will want to be sure you can contain this.

Decide how you want to decorate your seashells. Some people just like the natural look of their seashells, and they don't want to add anything to them. Others want to add a touch of glitter to them to make them sparkle. Especially gold glitter can remind you of the sparkling seashores. Using a permanent marker can help you write either your name, or perhaps the name of the place you have visited on the seashell. It is too challenging to write on seashells using regular markers, a permanent marker will leave a good mark. Children should be monitored when using permanent markers.

If using glitter, paint some glue on in a light coat. Then sprinkle some glitter on your seashell, or even dip your seashell into the glitter. You can put glitter in a dish and then dip in it to get a dramatic look.

To use the markers decide what you want to say and then write it slowly and carefully. Use block letters. If you use glitter and markers, do the markers first.

Let your seashell dry. Once the seashell has dried, then you can add the magnet backing to help support your seashell. Then add it to the refrigerator and enjoy the summer all year long!
