Kids Faking Sick to Get Out of School? What to Do

Jaipi Sixbear

Every child in the universe has or will fake sick to get out of school at one point in their life. With some kids, it's a regular habit. What do you do with a kid who constantly fakes being sick? Do you approach it with clever creative solutions? Ground them for life? Take away privileges? How about all of the above? You can start by calling their bluff.

Overdo their treatment. Hover over them like a mother hen, even if you're the rooster dad. Smother them with tender loving care. Check in on them at least four times an hour. Bring them endless glasses of water. Make a nuisance of yourself. Believe me, they'll be feeling better in no time at all. The beauty of this solution is, they can't get mad at you. After all, you're just taking care of them, right?

Suggest a trip to the doctor, just to be safe. It's amazing how fast some kids recover when you mention the word doctor. If you have a regular doctor, they may even collaborate with you. Just let them know you have a child who likes to fake illness. I did this with one of my kids once. The doctor gave her a thorough exam and a bit of a scare by bringing up all possible reasons for her illness.

Hire a babysitter for your "sick" child. There's nothing more embarrassing for them. Better yet, make it someone close to their age but slightly older. Be sure they know the babysitter personally, or it's no fun. They'll be too embarrassed to tell their older friend they're not really sick. Have the babysitter overdo their treatment too, for good measure.

When your child fakes sick, make it days before they have any fun. After all, they're too sick to go to school. That air conditioned movie theater can't be good for a sick child. They need their rest too. Insist they stay inside to recover for several days after their fake illness. They'll think twice before faking sick again, I assure you.

Sick kids can't eat solid food. Make that liquid diet extra yummy. Add their baby sisters liquid vitamins to everything. Consider doling out baby food as a nutritional supplement. After all, their tender stomach can't tolerate adult food. Make sure the baby food is peas, carrots or whatever else they hate. Don't you dare give them baby fruit. Kids faking sick to get out of school? Don't worry, I've got your back.

Ahahahahahahaaaaa- I am laughing my ASS off- I used to do all these sick tactics, and my grandma would report me to school so the truant officer would come check on me. Ha ha...I only faked sick a few times since she made me feel like a felon!!! Oh, us kids think we're tricky, our parents- even trickier!!!

Jaipi this one had me laughing so hard I had to stop so my dear darling 9 year old didn't hear me! She was born very ill and is now doing great but every so often she'll get "sick" and spend days on the couch. So I turned off the tv (told her it would make her dizzy to watch it) and took her temp every half hour for four hours, made her drink tons of ice water and on and on. Now I have even more ideas should she ever try it again. Oh, btw, she was better the next day and begging to go to school! ;)
