Kids Do the Funniest Things

It's Better to Laugh Than Cry with Your Kids

Have you ever had one of those days where everything in your life is going well, then you get the dreaded phone call from your child's school and you're thinking what now? Is everything okay? Are they hurt? Do I need to leave work right now? Well, let me share a story about a kindergarten boy that decided that a piece of candy looked better up his nose than in his mouth.

It was a typical Friday afternoon for me. Everyone had left for lunch and I was stuck answering the phones for an hour. Well, as I about to beat my head against the desk, my cell phone vibrated. We are not allowed to have our cell phones ring on our desk, so I set it to vibrate. Next thing I knew, the switchboard phone rang. It was my son's elementary school nurse calling to say that my son was fine but that he had stuck a piece of hard candy up his nose and she couldn't get it out of his nose.

"Can you come pick him up from school?", the nurse asked.

"Is he in any pain from the candy up his nose", I asked.

"No, he's not. But it is a holiday weekend and I'm not sure if it will come out his nose the old fashioned way. I've tried and nothing."

"Okay, I'll try to get a hold of my husband because I work in another town and he should be home. Thanks."

After I hung up the phone, I started giggling and I couldn't stop. I mean, really? Come get him because he stuck a piece of candy up his nose? My child has never done anything like that before, so I'm only seeing the humor in the situation at this point. I put a call into my husband and he finally calls me back 30 minutes later.

"What is it?", Kevin asks.

"The school nurse called and Chad has stuck a piece of candy up his nose and she can't get it out and her suggestion was to take him to the doctor's. I really need you to pick him up."

Okay, by this time, Kevin is furious and cussing at the situation and vowing to ground Chad until he is 18. He agrees to go pick him up and once there, Chad just looks at Kevin and smiles and says, "Hi Daddy!"

After many phone calls back and forth and the decision is made not to take him to the doctor, Kevin and Chad take a nap and wake up right when I walk in from work. Phone calls were made to our various relatives relating the story to them and asking for advice and listening to the loud laugher on the other end of the phone, we decide to go to bed.

Daddy, daddy, Momma, momma...I can hear it but I'm thinking its Saturday morning. Why am I hearing that? I lift my head from the pillow and there is Chad with a little green piece of something in his hand. He was so proud of himself that he was able to get it out himself.

Moral to the story...don't always listen to the school nurse. Sometimes, kids will figure out a way to make themselves better.

Wonderful post! As a mother of 2 adult children, I've been there. *S*
I also have a baby sister who is 14 years younger than me, and life with her was one hell of an education when I was a teenager. I married when I was 16, and became a mother at 17. Needless to say...there was a lot of humorous events in those years so long ago...LOL
Thanks for sharing..and bringing those memories. I just may write about those funny events on my own blog as I wouldn't want to embarrass myself on your wonderful post...LOL
    thank you!
