Pam Gaulin
Kids can create their own free greeting cards for all occasions when they use the paper crafts technique of collage.

Paper Crafts Age Appropriateness: Collage Method

Kids of all ages can collage together a greeting card, for free! Toddlers two and up will have fun with this arts and crafts idea, because it involves glue. Older kids can use this method to create a detailed greeting card, or as a last-minute money saver for a birthday party or other holiday.

Materials for Free Collage Cards

1 blank card - Take any blank piece of paper and fold it in half. Now you have your own blank greeting card.

1 blank envelope

glue stick or make your own glue

torn pieces of paper from any magazines or other recycled papers OR tear pieces from whole pieces of construction paper.

Paper Crafts Collage Methods: Design

Parents, educators and caregivers who would like to guide children in crafting the collage greeting card, may want to review some basic design concepts.

The front of the card should have one dominant element. The dominant element in this paper crafts collage greeting card can be related to the holiday or event.

Cut out or tear one large piece of paper and glue it down.

Once the dominant element has been glued onto the paper, it's time to spruce up the rest of the greeting cards.

Paper Crafts Collage Methods: More Decoration

Next, add other related design objects to the complete the image on the front. Add other pieces of paper, or "collage" together the rest of the image. Use fun items in your collage file bin or recycled magazines.

Collage Methods Adding Text

Add text to the front of the card but cutting words and letters out of magazines and from other printed materials. Or use a crayon or marker to write aholiday message or birthday greeting.

Write a personal message inside!

Back of the Card

Encourage kids to include their signature on the back of their cards. This is a good idea for collage cards, and all greeting cards. Help them come up with a short slogan or logo to include on the back of their cards. Just like Hallmark and American Greetings.

"Alex made this." Or "Chloe's Creations" are both cute ideas.

Now you have a paper crafts technique for creating homemade collage greeting cards for any holidays or special events.
