With a tag line like "In space no one can eat ice cream," you know this one has to be a keeper. The story line for "Killer Klowns from Outer Space" is two college students discover a spaceship in the woods--but this is no ordinary spaceship. Oh no--it is a circus tent and the aliens who emerge are the creepiest of the creepy when it comes to clowns. Note that these clowns are klowns--why? Your guess is as good as mine, maybe the spelling change is supposed to seem scarier or maybe alliteration is supposed to make for better horror.
These klowns "harvest" humans for the purpose of (we assume) eating them later. They aim alien guns at their victims and shoot them with cotton candy rays that wrap their snacks up in neat, pink, sweet an sticky "pods."
The evil klowns also have trail-sniffing balloon dogs at their disposal to help them track their prey. Did I mention the monstrous popcorn that the klowns can shoot to help them in their hunts? The popcorn pieces are individual little killer korns (yeah, I made that up) that harass intended victims and help the alien klowns as they strive for small town domination.
One unforgettable scene features a klown using the dead body of the local sheriff as a puppet. "Killer Klowns from Outer Space" may be one of the wackiest and funniest, play-it-straight horror movie I have ever seen. It can't be missed. I first heard about it from a friend and I thought surely it couldn't be as bad--or hilarious--as he had told me, but yep, it is. Not only is it so ridiculous that I couldn't stop giggling through all of it, the story was so bad that I couldn't bring myself to turn it off. It was like the proverbial train wreck--I couldn't stop watching.
"Killer Klowns from Outer Space" is a definite classic horror movie that just isn't terrifying. It is the ultimate crazy party movie and must be seen by all horror and weird movie enthusiasts. If you haven't seen it--find it. Watch it. Giggle at it. Enjoy it. Recommend it to your friends. I did all of those things and still recommend it for anyone who enjoys campy fun in their horror.
