Killer Whale Vs Polar Bear

James
Polar bears are one of the apex predators of the Artic, so it's hard to believe that they could be bested by another creature. That said, the killer whale is probably the most deadly predator, sans humans, in the entire world. The killer whale has no natural predators and is capable of killing the largest animals in the world, including the blue whale. So, if you were wondering, a polar bear would not do very well against a killer whale.

Since the fight has to take place in the water, one of the main advantages that the whale has is its superior swimming ability. It can attack the polar bear from all sorts of angles and can also outswim it, meaning that the bear has no chance of escape. If the bear is stranded on an ice patch, the whale could most likely knock it over like they do against seals and sea lions.

The other huge advantage that the killer whale has over the polar bear is its immense size. A polar bear can weigh about a half ton, while the orca weighs in at about 6 tons, meaning it is much larger: about 12 times as heavy, actually. This, combined with the orcas tremendous speed and agility would make quick work of the polar bear.

If it makes you feel any better, though, the killer whale will only consume about five-hundred pounds of flesh in any given day, meaning that it probably won't eat the entire polar bear. That is, unless it's hunting in a pack. If that's the case then the polar bear is as much as screwed because the killer whales are going to eat everything.

A polar bear might even have trouble against an orca calf, which only weighs about 400 pounds at birth. If we give it some time to mature to about 1,000 pounds--the same as the polar bear--it would completely decimate it because it is a much better swimmer and a more powerful creature overall. There's really no way I can see a polar bear defeating a killer whale, regardless of the venue or circumstance.
