Killing Fireflies

Adam Kamerer
You flit through my dreams,
A firefly glittering in the dark,
Swept on tumultuous winds
That I blow greatly from my lungs,
Hoping they'll blow you off your course,
And into the jar I've placed nearby for you.
I do this,
Not because I am vindictive or spiteful,
But because I am a selfish child,
Killing fireflies for moments of luminescence,
Just as I'm killing you,
In the breathless hollows of a jar,
Where you'll flap your wings in panic,
And bang against my glass
In a musical
tink-tink-clink
That is pleasing to my ears.
Understand this, firefly,
As I have come to understand it:
You shine only when I place you in the dark.

Just had to read this one again--brutally honest with a unique style--I like it a lot.

We don't get fire flies like you do back east. Great poem, welcome to AC.
