Killing Morals

TV is Too Vulgar These Days

AC FITNESS BOY
I am sorry I find today's TV programming so offensive. But I can barely watch TV these days without getting upset by their, "humor" in a few short minutes of revulsion, a program called "Two and a half men" had so many gross jokes, that I couldn't publish what they said on Associated Content. And then I watched "Family Guy" and he was in a spelling bee and had them use words in a dirty sentence and then some old guy a dog and that evil baby went to a club and were saying some pretty crude things to young women.

I don't know if you have this problem of being repulsed by such talk, but I usually don't watch TV anymore because it just happens with such frequency that to sit there, watch it and feel dirty is a waste of time. And I don't think I'm alone. In fact many teenagers who watch a lot of TV usually get involved in teen pregnancy due to the graphic nature of TV today. That was a statistic I read recently. Sorry I can't give you the specifics. But many people in my family tell me how vile these shows are, and I tend to agree.

I am not an activist, I am not for censuring expression, but I did want to make more people aware, that not everyone loves watching these vile shows and if it wasn't for public broadcasting, I probably would give up on TV in general. But I have learned that you can make people think through writing on Associated Content, and that you can voice an opinion.

The truth is, it doesn't take a lot of creativity to add shocking images of women's body parts. It is much harder to make people care about a character without resorting to soft porn. I am no longer someone who watches MTV simply because although I do enjoy listening to music, I find vulgar images they show to be too degrading to women.

And its not like I haven't personally been affected by this degrading imagery. If men didn't have such skewed images of how to treat beautiful women, I wouldn't have been grabbed at by so many horrible men. And for the record, I don't even own stilettos or fishnet stockings. I never go to clubs, I vowed to wait till marriage and I can't even get a guy to want to ask me out. They either want to get too personal too quickly or they just want to be friends. And I've only felt a true connection to guys who want to just be friends because I don't feel men who grab at me have any good intentions.

So although some people love these repulsive images and then say it's a woman's fault if she gets raped. I think there is too much sexually explicit material to be found too easily and it is causing a rift between men and women at an alarming rate. There has never been so much divorce or abortions or teen pregnancy or unwed mothers and I don't think this heartless portrayal of beauty being wasted on dirty men is helping the situation.

That's just my opinion, and I can't help it if I have a moral compass and want my dignity despite TV telling everyone its ok to just hook up. It is cold, callous, and heartless to all the babies born into this situation. Growing up without moral guidance or love, being told to experiment with their bodies with other children so they become numb. It is a horrible situation to have to hear these stories. And you can't tell me TV hasn't helped create part of the problem.

Oh...I could not possibly agree with you more! I find many shows offensive and some are shows I might really enjoy if there was less exploitation of women! I love this article and your view is to be applauded! Just for the record...I am far from being prudish and yet I am still offended! Excellent topic!
